Tom Cruise settles defamation lawsuit

The publisher of two tabloid magazines said it never intended to imply that Tom Cruise had cut all ties to his daughter after his divorce and announced Friday that it had reached a settlement with the actor over two stories it published.

Bauer Publishing and Cruise’s lawyer wrote in a joint statement that the terms of the settlement were confidential.

Tom Cruise may be the latest so-called “swatting” victim after police responded to a 911 call of an armed robbery at the actor’s Beverly Hills house on Thursday and found no crime had been committed, authorities said.

Shortly after noon, police received a call reporting a robbery in progress, Sgt. Renato Moreno said. Officers responded to the house, spoke with private security and then conducted a search. Nothing was found.

Cruise and his family weren’t home when the call was made. There were no arrests.

Tom Cruise sues tabloid for $50 million over Suri claim

Tom Cruise is suing Bauer Publishing, which publishes magazines such as Life & Style and In Touch, EW has confirmed.

The actor filed the suit over recent stories that claim he has “abandoned” his six-year-old daughter, Suri. The lawsuit calls out a July story in Life & Style with coverlines such as “Suri in Tears, Abandoned by her Dad,” and also an October issue of In Touch that had a cover photo of Suri with the line, “Abandoned by Daddy.”

The 50 million dollar lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles today, states that Cruise is suing Bauer Publishing for defamation and false light invasion of privacy. Cruise’s lawyer said that he told the magazines these claims were untrue, but they refused to print a correction.

“Tom doesn’t go around suing people. He’s not a litigious guy,” Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields said in the statement to The Wrap. “But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: Divorce settlement is confidential

After Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes reached a settlement in their divorce yesterday, rumors swirled with regards to the specifics of the deal.

Many outlets, including People, reported yesterday that the couple’s daughter, Suri, 6, will live primarily with Holmes in New York with generous visitation by Cruise. People cites an anonymous source saying, “They both love their daughter, and Tom thinks she should be with her mother.” Another anonymous source told People, “Neither one of them wanted this to be hashed out in public.”

However, Katie Holmes’ attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, said to People, “There are numerous inaccuracies in the reports regarding the purported contents of the agreement reached between the parties. The agreement is confidential and its terms will not be disclosed.”

We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other’s commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other’s roles as parents,” reps for Cruise and Holmes told People.

While details were not available, People reports “sources close to both sides say that Cruise, 50, and Holmes, 33, were working on an arrangement in which Suri, 6, lives in New York with her mother and her father is given generous visitation rights.”

Earlier this weekend, it was reported that the two were in settlement talks to avoid divorce court.
