Former 'Survivor' contestant dies in train accident (updated)

People reports that Caleb Bankston, who competed on Survivor: Blood and Water, died on Tuesday when the train he was on derailed.

Bankston, who worked at the Alabama Warrior Railway in Birmingham, was 26. He competed on the show in 2013 alongside his fiancé, Colton Cumbie, ending the game in ninth place.

“Caleb was an amazing man and friend,” fellow contestant Aras Baskauskas told People. “One of the sweetest and most sincere humans I’ve ever come across. I am gutted by his loss. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Survivor host Jeff Probst also mourned Bankston in a statement: “The entire Survivor crew is together in Nicaragua. We are shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of Caleb. He was one of the most humble and likable contestants we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with on the show. A true gentleman. He will be missed by so many. We extend our most sincere condolences to his family and to his fiance, Colton.”

Bankston is the third Survivor contestant to die since the show premiered in 2000.  In 2010, Jenn Lyon, who placed fourth on Survivor: Palau in 2005,  died after a long battle with breast cancer. Last year, original Survivor contestant B.B. Andersen died at age 77 after a battle with brain cancer.

Judge orders former 'Survivor' producer to Mexico to stand trial for murder

A U.S. magistrate judge on Tuesday ordered Bruce Beresford-Redman — a reality TV producer whose credits include Survivor and Pimp My Ride — to be extradited to Mexico where he will be tried for the murder of his wife, the Associated Press is reporting. The body of Monica Beresford-Redman was found in a Cancun hotel sewer cistern last year while the couple were on a vacation in an attempt to reconcile their troubled marriage. If convicted, Beresford-Redman, who was been jailed since his arrest in November, faces a prison sentence of 12 to 30 years.

The reality star, who was convicted in 2006 of not paying taxes on his winnings from the show, is currently in violation of his supervised release, having not filed amended returns for 2000 and 2001. Hatch served a three-year prison sentence until 2009; he still owes $1.7 million in back taxes. The reality star claims he has not refiled due to a pending appeal with the U.S. Tax Court.
