Spike Lee puts up memorial for man who died from NYPD chokehold

Filmmaker Spike Lee has erected a memorial honoring Eric Garner, the man who was killed by a New York police officer’s chokehold July 17.

Garner was being arrested “on suspicion of selling untaxed, loose cigarettes” when a police officer placed a chokehold on him, the Associated Press reports. In a video of the event, Garner can be heard saying “I can’t breathe” before he loses consciousness. (Garner suffered from asthma.)  An autopsy later revealed that the chokehold did cause the 43-year-old’s death.

Spike Lee wants Zimmerman tweet lawsuit tossed out

Spike Lee is asking a federal judge to throw out a lawsuit filed by a Florida couple who say the movie director mistakenly retweeted their address as the home of George Zimmerman.

Lee’s attorneys filed a motion Tuesday to dismiss the lawsuit brought by Elaine and David McClain. Lee’s attorneys argue the lawsuit should be dismissed since the couple reached a $10,000 settlement with Lee last year.

The McClains say Lee tweeted their address instead of the one that belonged to Zimmerman, who was acquitted last summer in Trayvon Martin’s shooting death.

The McClains say they received death threats and had to temporarily move out of their home. Lee’s attorneys say the couple is seeking $1.2 million.

Spike Lee sued over false George Zimmerman tweet

Director Spike Lee is being sued by a couple whose address he falsely identified as being that of Trayvon Martin killer George Zimmerman, EW has confirmed.

The suit, filed by Robert Strick and Julia G. Young on behalf of Elaine and David McClain, claims that Lee tweeted out the McClain’s Florida address along with George Zimmerman’s name to his 240,000-plus Twitter followers in March 2012 and the McClains subsequently received multiple threats that forced them to leave their home.

The suit, filed in September, notes that the McClains reached an undisclosed settlement with Lee on March 29, 2012, but after the settlement and Lee’s apology, the couple continued to be harassed. They are currently seeking damages “in excess of … $15,000,” plus attorneys’ fees and court costs.

When asked about the suit by EW, a rep for Lee didn’t have further comment.

Spike Lee settles with elderly couple over misguided George Zimmerman tweet

An elderly couple has reached a settlement with Spike Lee after the pair said they had to leave their Florida home after the director help spread a Twitter posting listing their address as that of the man who shot an unarmed teen.

The couple’s attorney, Matt Morgan, announced the settlement Thursday. Morgan says Lee called them to apologize for retweeting their address. Specifics of the settlement weren’t disclosed. READ FULL STORY
