Supreme Court revives 'Raging Bull' lawsuit

Five years ago in 2009, Paula Petrella sued MGM over continuing commercial use of 1980’s Raging Bull, a film that her father Frank Petrella wrote the screenplay for. A federal judge and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Petrella could have filed the lawsuit long before 2009 and therefore had waited too long, but the Supreme Court has now reversed that ruling.

Now, Petrella can revive the lawsuit and potentially receive royalties from MGM. Head over to the Associated Press for the full story.

Supreme Court to hear appeal over 'Raging Bull'

The daughter of the man who wrote the Oscar-winning movie Raging Bull is hoping the Supreme Court will give her a final second TKO against a movie studio for ownership of boxer Jake LaMotta’s life story.

The high court on Tuesday agreed to hear an appeal over the movie’s copyright, one of eight cases granted by the justices as they prepare for the beginning of the new 2013-14 session on Oct. 7.

The court, on the cusp of its new fall term, will continue to conduct normal operations through Friday despite the government shutdown, including having the building open for tourists.

The Raging Bull case involves an appeal from Paula Petrella, the daughter of the movie’s author, Frank Petrella. The elder Petrella died in 1981, with his copyrights reverting to his daughter. She sued Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. for copyright infringement for creating and distributing copies of the movie, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said she waited too long before filing her lawsuit.

Jake LaMotta, the inspiration for 'Raging Bull,' to wed 7th wife -- report

Jake LaMotta, the boxer who inspired Martin Scorcese’s 1980 film Raging Bull, will wed for the seventh time on Jan. 4, the New York Post reports.

LaMotta, 90, has been engaged to his fiancée, Denise Baker, 62, for 12 years. The two recently acted together in a stage production called “Lady and the Champ,” which Baker directed.

A new movie based on LaMotta’s life called The Bronx Bull will premiere at the couple’s post-ceremony bash in Bisbee, Ariz. The film was originally called Raging Bull II, until legal action by MGM forced the project to change its name.

When asked about their honeymoon, Baker said, “At Jake’s age, we’ll have to come home and take a nap.”
