Aretha Franklin makes video appearance for Grammys tribute

Aretha Franklin appeared on the Grammys to thank the awards show for its opening tribute to her featuring Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Yolanda Adams, Martina McBride, and Florence Welch. Though she’s at home in Detroit recovering from a December surgery for an undisclosed condition, she thanked the academy via satellite while looking resplendent in an elaborate white gown.

Mariah Carey having a boy and a girl

People is reporting that Mariah Carey, 41, will give birth to a boy and girl. Carey’s husband Nick Cannon, 30, confirmed late last year that the couple are having twins. He also told People this week that the couple are decorating nurseries for their kids in Los Angeles and New York.

John Barry, Oscar-winning composer, dies at 77

john-barryImage Credit: Peter Jordan/AP ImagesFilm composer John Barry, who helped create one of the most iconic movie themes of all time and won five Oscars for his ground-breaking work, has died at age 77. According to the Associated Press, the English-born musician, who contributed the groovy signature theme to a dozen James Bond installments, passed away in New York on Sunday. In addition to his work on the 007 films, beginning with uncredited work on 1962′s Dr. No, Barry won Oscars for the score and song of 1966′s Born Free, 1968′s The Lion in Winter, 1985′s Out of Africa, and 1990′s Dances With Wolves.

Britney Spears album gets release date: March 15

Britney Spears’ new album may still not have a title, but it’s got a release date: March 15. The date comes courtesy of a leaked sales one-sheet, which her label Jive confirmed to MTV is authentic. The album will come in standard and deluxe versions, with the latter having three or four additional songs and an extended booklet (meaning more pictures of Spears). “Hold it Against Me” hitmakers Max Martin and Dr. Luke have multiple tracks on the LP, which also includes songs from Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Fraser T. Smith, and Bloodshy & Avant.

Bruno Mars strikes deal in cocaine case

Bruno Mars, who was arrested Sept. 19 after police allegedly found him with 2.6 grams of cocaine after a concert at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, will take a plea deal. According to the Associated Press, the first-time offender will waive an evidentiary hearing on Feb. 4 and plead guilty. He’ll pay a $2,000 fine, perform 200 hours of community service, and complete drug counseling. If he stays trouble free for a year, no conviction will remain on his record, the AP reports. Mars, who has seven Grammy nominations, will perform at the Feb. 13 ceremony.

Jimmy Buffett released from hospital after accident

Jimmy Buffett was released from an Australian hospital today and is “doing well” after suffering an accident at his concert last night, according to an official post on his website. Media reports stated that the 64-year-old singer tumbled off the stage at Sydney’s Hordem Pavillion and hit his head, at which point he was rushed to the hospital.

Bret Michaels recovering after heart surgery

Vince Neil pleads guilty to DUI, sentenced to 15 days

Vince Neil formally pleaded guilty today to misdemeanor drunk driving, the Associated Press reports. A judge sentenced the Motley Crue singer to 15 days in jail plus 15 days house arrest. Neil was arrested last June in Las Vegas; if convicted without this plea deal, he could have faced up to six months behind bars.

Jimmy Buffett hospitalized after fall from stage -- Update

Jimmy Buffett was hospitalized after falling from the stage during a concert in Sydney, according to the Associated Press. Australian media reported that the 64-year-old singer fell off the stage face first, banging his head. The audience was then urged to exit the theater, and the singer was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital.

UPDATE: In an official post on Buffett’s website, a spokesperson wrote, “As you probably already know, Jimmy had an accident while performing in Sydney last night and was taken to the hospital. The doctors say he is doing well and will be released tomorrow. More info as we get it, and thank you for all of your well-wishes!”

No Doubt's Tony Kanal is a daddy

No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal and longtime girlfriend Erin Lokitz introduced daughter, Coco Reese Lakshmi Kanal, who was born on Monday. On the band’s web site, Kanal wrote, “Welcome to the world our gorgeous daughter … Mom, Dad and Baby are happy and in love.”
