Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland has revealed that she underwent a kidney transplant last month. In a new interview with Seventeen magazine, the 21-year-old who plays Hayley Dunphy on ABC’s hit show, opens up about the kidney dysplasia she has battled throughout her life.
Hyland said her health issues have shed light on who is really her “family.” “You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what. My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney!” she said. “But [since her surgery on April 13] it’s also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you’re friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.”
One of those people has been her boyfriend Matt Prokop, who guest starred on Modern Family last week. “Any other 21-year-old guy would not be there, I guarantee it,” said Hyland. “I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have him be there for me.” Beyond her family and friends, Hyland noted, “I have a second chance at life — not a lot of people get that.”
