The family of teenage actress Ariel Winter agreed Wednesday to undergo counseling to try to resolve issues that led to her mother losing custody and control of her daughter’s already prolific career for the near future.
The accord came shortly before a trial over who would raise the Modern Family star was scheduled to begin, with both sides appearing likely to air longtime family grievances and other issues in court. Winter’s mother, Chrisoula Workman, has been accused of physically and emotionally abusing her 14-year-old daughter, claims she has vehemently denied.
The mother of Ariel Winter, the 14-year-old star of Modern Family who filed a restraining order and accused her mother of physical and emotional abuse, denied the charges, telling People, “It’s all untrue, it’s all untrue.”
Chrisoula Workman was stripped of parental custody soon after Winter filed court papers on Oct. 3 detailing extensive abuse. But she told People, “I have my doctor’s letter that my daughter’s never been abused. … I have stylists’ letters that she’s never been abused.”
Workman also denied the accusations to NBC News, claiming in a statement they are a response to her disapproval of her daughter’s romantic relationship with an 18-year-old boyfriend.
Ariel Winter, the 14-year-old actress who plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, has been removed from her home by a judge after allegations that her mother, Crystal Workman, was physically and emotionally abusing her, according to court documents obtained by EW. Winter is currently in the guardianship of her older sister, Shanelle Workman.
TMZ first reported the story. The TMZ report noted that Workman was also abused as a child by Crystal and placed in foster care.
Another hearing for Ariel has been set for Nov. 20.
A rep for Winter declined to comment.

Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland has revealed that she underwent a kidney transplant last month. In a new interview with Seventeen magazine, the 21-year-old who plays Hayley Dunphy on ABC’s hit show, opens up about the kidney dysplasia she has battled throughout her life.
Hyland said her health issues have shed light on who is really her “family.” “You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what. My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney!” she said. “But [since her surgery on April 13] it’s also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you’re friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.”
One of those people has been her boyfriend Matt Prokop, who guest starred on Modern Family last week. “Any other 21-year-old guy would not be there, I guarantee it,” said Hyland. “I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have him be there for me.” Beyond her family and friends, Hyland noted, “I have a second chance at life — not a lot of people get that.”
