'Behind the Candelabra' author, ex-Liberace lover sentenced to prison

A former lover of Liberace who was the subject of Behind the Candelabra, the HBO film on the pianist’s life, has been sentenced to eight to 20 years in a Nevada prison for failing another court-ordered drug test while on probation for burglary and identity theft convictions.

Washoe District Judge Patrick Flanagan sentenced Scott Thorson on Wednesday after a string of bad drug tests capped by his failure to show up at a court-ordered treatment facility.

Flanagan originally suspended the prison sentence in July and gave Thorson a second chance in September after testing positive for methamphetamine, but he failed tests twice in October and again on Nov. 1. He was arrested Nov. 19 after violating an order to enter an inpatient treatment facility in Reno two weeks earlier, court records show.

Thorson, 54, whose real name is Jess Marlow, had admitted he was an addict but insisted he was determined to get sober when he tearfully appealed to the judge in September to spare him from prison.

Rep says Michael Douglas was misquoted about cancer cause

Michael Douglas’ publicist issued a correction regarding what Douglas said about oral sex causing his throat cancer. The rep told the Associated Press last night the comments were misrepresented. “In a discussion with the newspaper, they talked about the causes of oral cancer, one of which was oral sex, which is noted and has been known for a while now.”

But The Guardian, the U.K. paper that Douglas originally made his remarks to, is standing by its story. On Monday night, the paper posted an audio clip of Douglas’ quote, along with a transcript that described interviewer Xan Brooks asking, “Do you feel, in hindsight, that you overloaded your system? Overloaded your system with drugs, smoking, drink?” Douglas reportedly responded, “No. No. Ah, without getting too specific, this particular cancer is caused by something called HPV, which actually comes about from cunnilingus.”

UPDATE: A rep for the actor pointed EW to a quote from Douglas at this past Monday’s American Cancer Society tribute. “I never expected to become a poster boy for head and neck cancer, but, if after what started out as trying to answer a couple of questions about the suspected sources of this disease results in opening up discussion and furthering public awareness then I’ll stand by that,” Douglas said. “Head and neck cancer can be caused by many things including the HPV virus, smoking, alcohol, drug abuse, genes, environment and stress. I do not know what caused my particular cancer. If I did I’d have a Nobel Prize. I do know that I am here today because of all the incredible advances in cancer research and treatment. Early awareness is a key factor. If this episode contributes to public awareness all the better.”

Over the weekend, U.K. paper
The Guardian published an interview with Michael Douglas where he discussed his 2010 throat cancer diagnosis. Responding to a question about whether he regretted his years of smoking and drinking, he replied, "No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus]

, which actually comes about from cunnilingus.” He continued, “I did worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration didn’t help trigger it. But yeah, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.”

To no one’s surprise, Douglas’ remarks took off all over the Internet. The Guardian published a follow-up piece discussing the potential scientific truth behind the comments and concluded, “Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much research evidence to back up Douglas’ claim that the cure for throat cancer is still more cunnilingus.”

A rep for the actor, 68, did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment, but his rep told USA Today, “Michael Douglas did not say cunnilingus was the cause of his cancer. It was discussed that oral sex is a suspected cause of certain oral cancers as doctor’s in the article point out but he did not say it was the specific cause of his personal cancer.”
