Kathy Bates recovering after double mastectomy

Academy Award-winning actress Kathy Bates has undergone a double mastectomy to battle her recently diagnosed breast cancer — nine years after surviving a brush with ovarian cancer. “After much consideration, I underwent a double mastectomy,” Bates revealed to People, explaining that she was diagnosed with breast cancer several weeks ago. “Luckily, I don’t have to undergo radiation or chemo. My family call me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception.”

Bates won’t let her illness slow her down. According to the magazine, she is “looking forward to getting back to work” and attending Sept. 23’s Primetime Emmy Awards, where she’ll compete for both outstanding actress in a drama (for her starring role on Harry’s Law) and outstanding guest actress in a comedy (for her role as Charlie Sheen’s ghost on Two and a Half Men).

In the post, the comedian explains that on Tuesday, she helped lift a woman who was “struggling to get out of her car.” Later, O’Donnell began to feel a variety of muscle aches, as well as nausea and clamminess. She Googled “womens heart attack symptoms,” but did not believe she was going into cardiac arrest even though her symptoms matched what she found online. Then O’Donnell took some aspirin: “thank god / saved by a tv commercial / literally,” she writes in her signature free verse.
