Barbara Walters released from hospital, recovering from chicken pox

ABC says Barbara Walters is out of the hospital and recovering from chicken pox at home.

ABC said Tuesday that the 83-year-old host on The View is resting comfortably and “getting stronger.” There was no indication of when she might return to work.

Walters was hospitalized after falling and cutting her head at a pre-inaugural party in Washington on Jan. 19. The news veteran later was diagnosed with chicken pox, which typically hits people when they are children.

The disease can be serious in older people because of the possibility of complications like pneumonia.

David Geffen gives $100 million to create UCLA scholarship fund

Record exec, producer, and philanthropist David Geffen has established a $100 million scholarship fund for UCLA’s medical school, which has born his name since he donated $200 million to the school in 2002. The new scholarship fund will cover the entire cost of education — including tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and other expenses — for up to 33 of “the very best medical students attending the David Geffen School of Medicine,” according to a press release.

“The cost of a world-class medical education should not deter our future innovators, doctors and scientists from the path they hope to pursue,” Geffen said in a statement. “We need the students at this world-class institution to be driven by determination and the desire to do their best work and not by the fear of crushing debt. I hope in doing this that others will be inspired to do the same.”

Ian McKellen clarifies cancer status

Yesterday, news broke that Sir Ian McKellen has been living with prostate cancer for six or seven years. “If it is contained in the prostate it’s no big deal,” McKellen reportedly told the Daily Mirror. “I am examined regularly, and it’s just contained, it’s not spreading. I’ve not had any treatment.”

But in a statement to ABC News, McKellen’s agent denied the Mirror‘s report, saying that McKellen “does not have prostate cancer” and that his remarks had been “taken out of context and from an interview from years ago.”

So, what’s the truth? McKellen clarified his health status today on his Twitter account, writing, “There have been new reports in the press of the old news that I have early prostate cancer. This was diagnosed six or seven years ago. There is no cause for alarm. I am examined regularly and the cancer is contained. I’ve not needed any treatment.”

McKellen will appear next in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in theaters Dec. 14.

Ian McKellen is battling prostate cancer

Sir Ian McKellen has prostate cancer. The 73-year-old star of The Hobbit discussed his diagnosis with the Daily Mirror yesterday, saying that he has been suffering from the disease “for six or seven years.”

“When you have got it, you monitor it, and you have to be careful it doesn’t spread,” the two-time Oscar nominee explained to the Mirror. “But if it is contained in the prostate it’s no big deal. Many, many men die from it, but it’s one of the cancers that is totally treatable … I am examined regularly, and it’s just contained, it’s not spreading. I’ve not had any treatment.”

McKellen also emphasized the importance of early detection, saying that there is no need for prostate cancer patients to have surgery unless the cancer spreads outside of the prostate. “I have heard of people dying from prostate cancer, and they are the unlucky ones, the people who didn’t know they had got it and it went on the rampage. But at my age if it is diagnosed, its not life threatening,” he said.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will premiere in theaters Dec. 14.

Roger Ebert hospitalized after hip fracture

Famed Chicago movie critic Roger Ebert has been hospitalized with a hip fracture.

His wife, Chaz Ebert, told The Associated Press on Thursday that her husband was doing much better and “doctors are making assessments” about when he could leave the hospital.

Roger Ebert then posted on Twitter that he does not need surgery.

Chaz Ebert tweeted earlier in the day that her Pulitzer Prize-winning husband was doing well and “asking for computer, will probably tweet.” She jokingly attributed the fracture to “tricky disco dance moves.”

The 70-year-old Chicago Sun-Times film critic has had health problems over the last several years. He has battled cancer in his thyroid and salivary glands and lost his ability to speak and eat after cancer surgeries.

'Malcolm in the Middle' star Frankie Muniz recovering from 'mini-stroke'

EW has confirmed that 26-year-old Frankie Muniz — best known as the title character in the ’00s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle — is recovering after a serious medical episode last week. The former child star broke the news of his condition on Twitter: “I was in the hospital last Friday,” Muniz explained today. “I suffered a “Mini Stroke”, which was not fun at all. Have to start taking care of my body! Getting old!”

According to the Mayo Clinic, a “ministroke,” or transient ischemic attack (TIA), causes symptoms similar to those of a regular stroke — difficulty speaking or writing, confusion, weakness or numbness on one side of the body — but does not cause permanent brain damage or disability.

Muniz was last seen onscreen doing a guest spot on ABC’s Don’t Trust the B– in Apt. 23. He will appear next year in a TV movie called Destruction: Las Vegas.

Robin Roberts released from hospital

Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts was released from the hospital on Friday night, after spending a week there for a “tune up,” the anchor announced in a blog post.

Roberts, who underwent a bone marrow transplant in September to treat myelodysplastic syndrome, was in the hospital for a latent virus that wasn’t responding to medication.

“Our immune systems usually take care of a virus like this … but mine is only 59 days old,” she wrote. “Physically I felt fine but being back in the hospital took an emotional toll on me. The wonderful doctors, nurses and support staff lifted my spirits..it was comforting seeing them again. They assured me the majority of BMT patients have to be re-admitted to the hospital for various reasons. I decided to look at my brief stay as a “tune up”…and then I would be back on the road to recovery. By the grace of God, I am! The virus is under control and my numbers are going back up.”

An interview with Roberts from the hospital, conducted by her sister, will air on Good Morning America Tuesday.

Cheers actor George Wendt has been hospitalized with chest pains and forced to drop out of a Chicago stage production of The Odd Couple. The 64-year-old actor, best known for playing the beer-loving Norm on the long-running NBC sitcom, checked into the hospital Sunday evening, the Northlight Theatre in Skokie reported yesterday. “George is family to us at Northlight and we wish him well for a complete and speedy recovery,” Odd Couple director B.J. Jones told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He will be missed in the rehearsal room and on stage.”

Wendt “is getting medical attention and will eventually make a full recovery,” theater executive director Timothy Evans said in a statement.

Wendt had planned to play Oscar opposite Tim Kazurinsky’s Felix. The show will begin previews on Friday, as planned, and officially open Nov. 9, with Marc Grapey subbing for Wendt.
