Oscar-winning animator Bob Godfrey dies at age 91

Australian-born, British-based animator Bob Godfrey has died at the age of 91, according to the U.K. Guardian. Godfrey won an Academy Award in 1975 for his animated short film Great, about the British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He received Oscar nominations on three other occasions for 1972’s Kama Sutra Rides Again, 1979’s Dream Doll, and 1994’s Small Talk. But Godfrey was best known for his work on the Richard Briers-narrated BBC TV show Roobarb, which concerned the adventures of an excitable dog named Roobarb and a mischievous cat named Custard and which delighted a generation of British children in the ’70s. Briers himself passed away last week.

SAG nominees leaked online

Taye Diggs and Busy Philipps announced the 2013 SAG Award nominees this morning at 6 a.m. PT. But if you knew where to look, you could have learned the news hours earlier.

According to the Los Angeles Times, readers of the Awards Daily blog discovered that a glitch in the SAG website allowed readers to see the nominees by typing in the actor or movie’s name in a simple search. Though there was no comprehensive list posted on the site, the database snafu revealed the eventual nominations several hours before the official announcement.

“We are aware of this matter,” a SAG spokesperson said in a statement. “There appears to have been a technical glitch with the website uploading process and we are working with our vendor to resolve the problem.”

Meryl Streep presents Viola Davis with Women in Film award

They may have been Oscar rivals earlier this year, but there’s nothing but love between Meryl Streep and Viola Davis. Streep, who ended Davis’ awards run for The Help by winning the Best Actress Oscar for The Iron Lady, lauded her friend and colleague Tuesday at Women in Film’s annual Crystal + Lucy Awards.

She called Davis “a lion-hearted woman;” a gifted and determined actress who studied at Juilliard, won Tony Awards and captivated Hollywood with her eight-minute performance in Doubt. “She was a newcomer at 45,” Streep joked.

Davis returned the love as she accepted the award. “I have a confession,” she said, sharing how touched she was when Streep sent her a card after the film wrapped. Davis also kept a photo of the two of them together on set. “Okay Meryl, I framed the card,” Davis said. “So you can never come over to the house.”

Other honorees at the private ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel were actresses Christina Applegate and Chloe Grace Moretz, NBCUniversal Cable chief Bonnie Hammer, cinematographer Anette Haellmigk, and five female executives from Fox.

GLAAD Media Awards honor Chaz Bono, 'Hunger Games' star Josh Hutcherson

Cher made a surprise appearance to honor her transgendered son Chaz Bono on Saturday night at the Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards, where he received the  Stephen F. Kolzak Award for promoting equality. The award was presented by Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, Chaz Bono’s stepmother and the widow of his father, the late Congressman and entertainer Sonny Bono, but then his mother turned up — sporting a characteristically flamboyant awards show hairdo – to cheer on the pioneering work of her son.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation gives out dozens of awards annually to recognize outstanding representations of the gay, lesbian, transgendered and bisexual community. Most of those were already presented during the New York ceremony last month, though four were saved for Saturday’s west coast presentation…

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: New inductees

Many of music’s biggest stars partied at tonight’s 27th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Cleveland’s Public Hall. Guns N’ Roses — minus Axl Rose, who did not show up to the ceremony and went so far as to deny himself inclusion into the Rock Hall because “it doesn’t appear to be somewhere I’m actually wanted or respected” — headlined this year’s inductees. According to the AP, the first mention of Rose’s name at the ceremony drew boos.

Also inducted: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, folk icon Donovan, late singer-songwriter Laura Nyro, and British bands the Small Faces and Faces. Green Day, there to induct Guns N’ Roses, kicked off the celebration with a performance of “Letterbomb.”

The ceremony will air May 5 on HBO.
