Ellen Page receives death threats on Twitter

Los Angeles police detectives are looking into a series of death threats sent to Ellen Page on Twitter that coincided with threatening calls to the L.A. Film Festival making similar remarks, a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman confirmed to EW.

The spokeswoman wouldn’t give any details beyond the fact that the investigation started in June and is ongoing. Page’s recent film, To Rome With Love, screened at the L.A. Film Festival in June.

The Los Angeles Times, citing the search warrant affidavit, claims that anonymous calls to the festival threatened Page, and in one tweet the suspect wrote, “I’m going to murder Ellen Page. She’s dead.” Detectives in the case sought a search warrant to trace the Twitter account of the sender.

EW reached out to Page’s publicist, but as of press time, had not heard back.

Bar says employee won't pursue Gooding Jr. charges

A bartender who claimed that actor Cuba Gooding Jr. pushed her doesn’t plan to pursue criminal charges against him, managers at a New Orleans restaurant said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, police issued an arrest warrant on a misdemeanor charge of municipal battery for Gooding. Police say the bartender at the century-old Old Absinthe House told them that Gooding became upset after patrons started asking him to pose for photos with them at about 3 a.m. that morning. The bartender told investigators that Gooding pushed her after she asked him to calm down and again after she told him he should leave and that police had been called.

Gooding left the bar before police arrived and he met Wednesday morning with New Orleans police and was issued a court summons.

However, in a statement to The Associated Press, the French Quarter restaurant said its employee wouldn’t press the case.

“It is our understanding the employee involved in the alleged altercation has chosen to drop all charges against Mr. Cuba Gooding Jr.,” said Old Absinthe House spokeswoman Carolyn Pierce. “While we continue to investigate this matter internally, we are hopeful that this will put an end to the matter.”

Calls to Gooding’s attorney were not immediately returned, but his publicist, Nancy Kane, told AP that “Mr. Gooding, his representative and the New Orleans authorities … are moving swiftly to resolve this misunderstanding.”

New Orleans police spokeswoman Remi Braden said the arrest warrant was lifted after the summons was issued. The date for Gooding’s next court appearance was not immediately available.

The city’s municipal court had not yet received documents regarding Gooding’s summons, but they were expected to be delivered by the end of the week. Once the summons is processed, the bartender can officially drop the charges, a court employee said.

The 44-year-old actor is in New Orleans filming The Butler, a movie about a White House butler who serves eight American presidents. The film has a star-studded cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Liam Neeson, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Robin Williams, Alex Pettyfer and Minka Kelly.

The Butler director is Lee Daniels (Precious and Monster’s Ball).

Sheryl Crow granted temporary restraining order against threatening fan

A judge has granted Sheryl Crow atemporary restraining order against a man who is accused of threatening to shoot the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter.

The order requires Phillip Gordon Sparks, 45, to stay 100 yards away and not attempt to contact Crow, her family or any of her workers. She wrote in a sworn statement that she is fearful of Sparks because he has claimed in profane online tirades that she has stolen money from him and broken into his house.

She also states Sparks recently went to the offices of an entertainment union and told a worker that he was going to “just shoot” her.

A worker at the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists wrote in declaration accompanying Crow’s filing that she spoke with Sparks on July 16 and he made the threat against Crow. He also threatened to shoot film executive Harvey Weinstein because he believed they were filming him and stole millions from him, the worker stated.

The temporary order was granted July 24 and first reported Monday by celebrity website TMZ. A hearing on a three-year protective order is scheduled for Aug. 14 in Santa Monica, Calif.

Attempts to contact Sparks were unsuccessful.

Crow, 50, has won nine Grammy Awards and has two sons, ages 5 and 2.

Bieber paparazzo faces criminal charges in pursuit

A paparazzo photographer faces criminal charges in connection with a high-speed chase of Justin Bieberearlier this month, marking the first use of a state law designed to clamp down on photographers’ reckless pursuit of celebrities.

The City Attorney’s office on Wednesday filed four charges againstPaul Raef, 30, including reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain, reckless driving, failure to obey a peace officer and following another vehicle too closely.

Raef could not be immediately reached for comment. If convicted, he faces up to one year in county jail and $3,500 in fines.

The charges stem from a July 6 incident where Los Angeles Councilman Dennis Zine, a former police officer, and three other motorists called 911 to report a high speed chase along the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley.

Prosecutors said responding officers saw a pack of six vehicles pursuing a silver Fisker car, which turned out to be driven by Bieber. A Toyota SUV, owned by Raef, was seen driving at speeds well over 80 miles an hour across all lanes and on the shoulder, as well as forcing its way into lanes when it had no room to merge safely.

Motorists were forced to brake and swerve to avoid colliding with Raef’s vehicle and the others, prosecutors said.

Bieber pulled over when officers signaled to, but Raef did not stop.

Bieber was cited for speeding and released.

Prosecutors said that about 30 minutes later, Bieber called 911 and said he was again being followed by the same Toyota.

California Highway Patrol officers arrived at a downtown Los Angeles parking garage, where other paparazzi had congregated, and found the Toyota with the same license plate as the one that had chased the singer.

Officers identified Raef as the driver. He scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 9.

Paparazzi pursuit of celebrities has long been identified as a risk in Los Angeles.
