Sinead O'Connor explains 16-day marriage: 'It felt like I was living in a coffin'

Sinead O’Connor might not have been involved in the most famous divorce of 2011, but fans and curiosity seekers alike are still wondering what broke up her 16-day marriage to Barry Herridge. Luckily for them, O’Connor — who, earlier this year before meeting Herridge, wrote on her blog that she was searching for a “sweet sex-starved man” — likes to share.

Speaking with Britain’s The Sun, O’Connor said the marriage made her feel as though she was “living in a coffin.” “It was going to be a coffin for both of us, and I saw him crushed … The whole reason I ended it was out of respect and love for the man.”

And what of the comments on her blog claiming the couple split in part because of “a bit of a wild ride i took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night”? According to O’Connor, she brought Herridge on a hunt for marijuana following their wedding. “We ended up in a cab in some place that was quite dangerous,” she told The Sun. “I wasn’t scared — but he’s a drugs counselor. What was I thinking? Then I was handed a load of crack. Barry was very frightened — that kind of messed everything up a bit, really.”

But O’Connor seems to be more frightened by the prospect of marriage itself. As the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer told The Sun, “I don’t think I will even date anyone.” [Via People]

Sinead O'Connor splitting with husband of 16 days

At least it lasted longer than seven hours and fifteen days. (But not quite as long as 72 days.) “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer Sinead O’Connor has split with her husband of 16 days, according to the singer’s website. On Monday, just over two weeks after her Dec. 8 wedding with Barry Herridge, O’Connor wrote: “Dear friends, I had for reasons u will all understand, wished to keep this private but have been told today it is to be leaked in the next few days despite my best efforts. So I must now leak it myself so as the record is straight … From the moment myself and my husband got together not long ago, there was intense pressure placed upon him by certain people in his life, not to be involved with me. These were people who had never met me but had formed opinions of me based on what they read about ‘Sinead ‘O’Connor’ in the media etc. Entitled as they are to their opinions about me many perhaps well deserved, there was no righteousness on anyone’s part to put my husband through what he was put through as a result of his desire to be with me and to marry me and as a result of his actually marrying me.”

O’Connor continues, claiming the marriage was ruined by “certain people in my husband’s life,” and ” also by a bit of a wild ride i took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night as I don’t drink. READ FULL STORY
