New Zealand filmmaker killed in shark attack

Award-winning filmmaker Adam Strange was attacked and killed by a shark off the coast of New Zealand Tuesday night. He was 46 and leaves behind a wife and daughter.

Strange was swimming 200 yards offshore Muriwai Beach, near Auckland, when he was attacked, NBC News reported. Police and lifeguards responded, with officers opening fire on the shark, but Strange couldn’t be saved.

On his website, Strange describes his early work in graphic design and TV commercials; his list of awards, which include being short-listed for the Young Directors Award; and some of his hobbies. His 2008 theatrical short, Aphrodite’s Farm, which he described as a “magical milk mystery” set in the 1930s, won the Crystal Bear for “Best Short Film, 14+” at the Berlin Film Festival in 2009. A trailer for the film is available online.

“All along, we hoped we were making a Kiwi fairytale that had universal themes, and appeal that went beyond borders or languages,” Strange said at the time. “To have it affirmed this positively really is the ultimate accolade — the perfect fairytale ending.”
