Ratings: Shocker! Super Bowl XLIV dominates broadcast networks' week

No surprise here: The broadcast network’s ratings have arrived for the week ending Feb. 7, and Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIV—which knocked off the finale of M*A*S*H to become the most-watched television program of all time—is the big winner for the seven-day period. The big game, which saw the New Orleans Saints triumph over the Indianapolis Colts, officially drew 106.5 million viewers.

The show CBS launched in the post-Super Bowl slot, Undercover Boss, came in at No. 2 with a super-healthy 38.7 million viewers—the largest-ever audience for a new series after the Super Bowl. (It ranks third for all-time series, behind Friends in 1996 and Survivor in 2001.) Boss‘ numbers were also good enough to make the most-watched reality series premiere ever and the biggest new series launch on TV since 1987.  Fox’s American Idol, which usually sits atop the chart, came in at No. 3 and No. 4, with 24.7 million and 21.0 million viewers for its Tuesday and Wednesday airings, respectively. In fifth place was TV’s top scripted show, CBS’ NCIS, which drew 19.2 million viewers.

The week’s full top 20 shows—complete with viewership numbers—can be found after the jump.

Super Bowl most watched of all time

As expected, last night’s Saints-Colts match-up now ranks as the most watched Super Bowl of all time with a whopping 106.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media. The Saints’ underdog victory also beat the 1983 M*A*S*H series finale as the most watched television program of all time as measured by households, garnering 51.7 million in comparison to M*A*S*H’s 50.2 million. The total viewership, which includes same-day DVR playback, tops last year’s Arizona-Pittsburgh game by 7.8 million viewers.

Ratings: Super Bowl XLIV could top 100 million viewers

The New Orleans Saints’ victory over the Indianapolis Colts may have scored one for the record books for CBS, according to preliminary results from Nielsen Media. The overnight results put the live viewership at an estimated 96.5 million, up 7.3 million over last year’s comparable preliminary numbers, the highest rating in 23 years — and likely to break the 100 million-mark once numbers are finalized and time-delayed viewership is added in. The high numbers were, of course, a boon to CBS’ airing of reality show Undercover Boss, whose 38.1 million viewers make it the best-rated post-Super Bowl airing since 2006’s Grey’s Anatomy.
