News Corp splits into print and entertainment divisions

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. said Thursday that it plans to split into two separate companies, one holding its newspaper business and the other its entertainment operations. Under the proposal, the global media conglomerate will be divided into two publicly traded companies. One entity will operate as a newspaper and book publishing firm. The other will be an entertainment company that includes the 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox broadcast TV network and the Fox News channel.

The Murdoch family, which controls nearly 40 percent of the voting shares in News Corp., is expected to maintain control of both companies. “There is much work to be done, but our board and I believe that this new corporate structure we are pursuing would accelerate News Corporation’s businesses to grow to new heights, and enable each company and its divisions to recognize their full potential — and unlock even greater long-term shareholder value,” Murdoch said in a statement. John Travolta, lawyer Marty Singer sued for libel

John Travolta and his lawyer, Marty Singer, were sued today for trade libel by Robert Randolph, the author of a recent book about the actor, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The lawsuit follows earlier accusations against the actor of sexual battery. Randolph’s book, You’ll Never Spa in This Town Again, details Travolta’s alleged sexual encounters with other men in bath houses. Randolph also participated in a Gawker.com article about the actor titled “The Secret Sex Life of John Travolta” in 2010.

Shortly after that story was published, Singer wrote a letter to Gawker, calling Randolph’s claims “blatant defamatory lies.” Randolph’s suit states that since the letter has been widely circulated around the Internet, Singer has led the public to believe he is an unreliable source and has, as a result, discouraged people from buying his book.

When reached for comment, Singer released this statement: “This is a ridiculous lawsuit. It is based on our letter which was completely privileged under the law. We intend to sue the attorneys for malicious prosecution after the court promptly dismisses this baseless lawsuit.”

Travolta’s reps also released a statement: READ FULL STORY »

Actress Susan Tyrrell has died at the age of 67. Tyrrell was best known for her Oscar-nominated supporting performance as a barfly in director John Huston’s 1972 boxing drama Fat City. Her eclectic filmography also included Andy Warhol’s Bad, Paul Verhoeven’s Flesh + Blood, and John Waters’ Cry-Baby.

In 2000, the actress was diagnosed with thrombocythemia, a rare disease of the bone marrow, and had both her legs amputated. Tyrell continued to act, appearing in such projects as Masked and Anonymous and, most recently, Kid Thing.

Although never a household name, Tyrrell’s fondness for leftfield projects and her at times outre behavior helped her acquire a devoted following amongst cult film fans. “The last thing my mother said to me was, ‘SuSu, your life is a celebration of everything that is cheap and tawdry,’” the actress recalled to writer Paul Cullum, who penned a 2000 profile of Tyrrell for the LA Weekly. “I’ve always liked that, and I’ve always tried to live up to it.”

Her death was confirmed by Cullum who said he was told by Tyrrell’s niece that she passed away in her sleep on Saturday at the actress’ home in Austin, Texas.
