'Innocence of Muslims' filmmaker interviewed by authorities

A filmmaker named Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who is linked to the inflammatory film Innocence of Muslims, was interviewed today by federal probation authorities, according to the AP. The interview took place early this morning at a sheriff’s station in Nakoula’s hometown of Cerritos, Calif. The filmmaker was not arrested. In 2010, Nakoula pleaded no contest to bank fraud charges.

Authorities have identified Nakoula as the key figure behind the Innocence of Muslims. The movie lampoons the prophet Mohammed and inspired riots in many Middle Eastern countries, one of which led to the killing of the U.S ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, after a trailer for the film appeared on YouTube.

Yesterday, one of the film’s few supporters, Terry Jones, told EW that the movie’s producer was concerned for his safety. Jones is the founder of the Stand Up America organization and is himself an outspoken critic of Islam. Jones had talked with the producer — who he said did not reveal his name — about distributing the film and on Sept. 12 Jones uploaded the movie’s trailer to the Stand Up America Facebook page. “I spoke to him yesterday twice,” Jones told EW on Friday. “He is definitely very concerned, afraid, and is definitely not planning on coming public in any form.”

James Franco sued by former NYU professor

Tags: , Movies

James Franco is being sued for defamation by one of his former New York University professors.

Ex-NYU professor José Angel Santana claims Franco defamed him in comments to the press, after Santana gave Franco a ‘D’ for the course.

Franco had previously told press that Santana was “awful” adding, “I didn’t feel like I needed to waste my time with a bad teacher,” according to the New York Post.

In an interview with the Post about the lawsuit, Santana called Franco a “bully” and said, “I didn’t deserve to be on the receiving end of those falsehoods. I was outraged that someone with his attendance record at NYU had the audacity to make those statements.”

Santana is seeking unspecified monetary damages.

This isn’t Santana’s first Franco-related lawsuit. In December, Santana sued NYU “for wrongful termination, discrimination, and harassment, alleging that when he gave Franco a “D” in Directing the Actor II for missing 12 out of 14 classes, he was demoted, systematically isolated from the university, and eventually denied reappointment.”

EW reached out to Franco’s rep, who did not respond to request for comment.

Court rules against Marilyn Monroe estate

A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that Marilyn Monroe’s estate is powerless to stop a California company from selling her images without its permission. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled that The Milton Greene Archives can continue to sell iconic images of the actress without paying her estate for publicity rights. The ruling hinged on Monroe’s legal residency. She owned a home in California and an apartment in New York when she died in Los Angeles in 1962.

Her estate at the time claimed Monroe was a New York resident to avoid paying California inheritance taxes. The court ruled that her estate can’t now claim Monroe was a California resident to take advantage of a state law granting posthumous rights of publicity to the famous. READ FULL STORY »

Coroner: Sage Stallone died from heart condition

Sylvester Stallone’s son Sage died at age 36 from natural causes due to a heart condition, coroner’s officials said Thursday.

Sage Stallone’s death on July 13 was attributed to a condition that causes blockage of the arteries, and no other factors were involved. It has been classified a natural death.
The actor and film director’s sudden death stunned his family and friends. Sylvester Stallone’s publicist described him as “devastated and grief-stricken” and the actor skipped several promotional events for his film The Expendables 2.

Sage Moonblood Stallone was the oldest of Sylvester Stallone’s children and co-starred with his father in two films. He also became involved in moviemaking, directing the 2006 short Vic, which screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
He made his acting debut in 1990′s Rocky V and appeared with his father in 1996′s Daylight.

Also in 1996, Sage Stallone and veteran film editor Bob Murawski co-founded Grindhouse Releasing, a company dedicated to preserving and promoting the B-movies and exploitation films of the 1970s and 80s.

He was found dead in his home by an employee and a relative. No foul play had been suspected, and toxicology results showed only a minimal amount of hydrocodone in his system.

Tags: , , Movies

Actor Vivek Shah has been arrested for allegedly sending menacing letters to five moguls — including Oscar-winning producer Harvey Weinstein — in an attempt to extort millions of dollars. ABC News reports that Shah is accused of threatening to kill members of Weinstein’s family unless $4 million were wired to an offshore bank account. Shah allegedly threatened coal magnate Christopher Cline, the owner of an NHL team, an oil executive, and another tycoon as well.

The alleged extortionist’s onscreen roles include an uncredited appearance in The Dark Knight (as “Middle Eastern Bank Hostage”) and bit parts on Bones and Outsourced. He was arrested by federal agents in Illinois on August 10 and is being held without bail in West Virginia, the state where one of the threatened millionaires resides.

A rep for Weinstein has not yet responded to EW’s request for comment.
