Nancy Kerrigan's father's death should be treated as homicide, DA says

Nancy Kerrigan’s father’s death will be treated as a homicide, the Middlesex, Mass. District Attorney confirms to People. A statement from the DA’s office read in part: “The Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death was cardiac dysrhytmia following a physical altercation with neck compression causing injury to the neck in the form of a cartilage fracture to the larynx area, in a person with hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular heart disease.”

Daniel Kerrigan, 70, was pronounced dead on Jan. 24, after having a violent altercation with his son, 45-year-old Mark Kerrigan. Mark Kerrigan was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on an elderly person and causing serious bodily injury. The DA’s statement today also noted: “As a result of these conclusions of the Medical Examiner, the investigation into Daniel Kerrigan’s death, and whether any charges in connection with his death are appropriate, remains ongoing.”

Sam Worthington to star in murder mystery

Avatar actor Sam Worthington is set to star in murder mystery Texas Killing Fields, Variety reports. Michael Mann will produce, and his daughter Ami Canaan Mann will direct from Donald F. Ferrarone’s script. The film starts shooting in April.

'Up' takes top prize at Annie Awards for animation

Pixar’s Up took home the Best Animated Feature prize Saturday night at the 37th Annual Annie Awards, which honor animation for film and TV. Walt Disney Animation Studios won six Annies, including three for The Princess and the Frog and three for Prep and Landing. DreamWorks Animation won five Annies, including awards for The Penguins of Madagascar, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Merry Madagascar.The awards were given out at UCLA’s Royce Hall, and the Winsor McCay honors for career contributions in the animation industry were given to Tim Burton, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Bruce Timm.

Andrew Shue marries 'Weekend Today' anchor Amy Robach

Former Melrose Place actor Andrew Shue and Weekend Today anchor Amy Robach got married Saturday in New York City, People reports. Guests at the wedding included Shue’s sister Elisabeth and her director husband Davis Guggenheim, and Robach’s NBC colleagues including Ann Curry and Kathie Lee Gifford. People reports that Shue, 42, and Robach, 37, are each recently divorced – his three sons and her two daughters were all in the wedding party.

Captain Phil Harris of 'Deadliest Catch' now talking after stroke

Captain Phil Harris, of Discovery Channel reality TV show Deadliest Catch fame, continues to make “great progress” recovering from his stroke, his shipmates on the Cornelia Marie said. At a post to the ship’s website today, his colleague Morgan wrote: “Capt. Phil was talking to friends and family today; showing his greatest progress since he suffered a massive stroke one week ago. It’s been a long and difficult week for friends and family as Phil was medivaced from St. Paul Island and under went surgery.

“Capt. Phil’s sons Josh and Jake have been at this hospital and continue to stay by their father’s side. Some Bering Sea fishermen have also come by to pay Phil a visit.

“Meanwhile, the F/V Cornelia Marie has been back fishing for Opilios. The season has really just begun, so there’s much more fishing to do. Great folks from around the world have sent their messages of encouragement and get-well soon greetings – for this, we will always be thankful. Many cards have been sent and they will all get to Phil as he recovers.”

Leif Garrett charged with felony drug possession

Former teen idol Leif Garrett has been charged with felony possession of heroin after his arrest in Los Angeles on Monday, the AP reports. The 48-year-old actor/singer was charged Friday and is now free on bond. His arraignment is set for Feb. 24.

Carrie Underwood to make movie debut in 'Soul Surfer'

Country star Carrie Underwood will take on her first big-screen role in Soul Surfer, a drama based on the true story of surfing champion Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm in a shark attack in 2003, when she was just 13. Race to Witch Mountain and Bridge to Terabithia’s AnnaSophia Robb has been cast as Hamilton; Underwood will play church youth group leader Sarah Hill, while Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt will play Hamilton’s parents. The cast also features Lorraine Nicholson and Kevin Sorbo. Principal photography starts this week in Oahu and Kauai, Hawaii. Sean McNamara will direct from a screenplay he wrote with Deborah Schwartz, Douglas Schwartz (Baywatch co-creator), and Michael Berk based on the best-selling autobiography Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton.

Christian Bale, Rachel McAdams on board for next Terrence Malick film

Christian Bale, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko are set to star in Terrence Malick’s next film, according to ScreenDaily. Plot details aren’t announced but the project will start shooting this fall on the romance. Meanwhile, Malick’s father/son drama The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, will be released later in 2010.

ABC to air 'Lost' finale, recap special on May 23

Steven Spielberg has paid tribute to Jaws producer David Brown, who died Monday at the age of 93. Spielberg said in a statement: “We all remember our favorite teacher — captivating, wise, humorous, and very kind. David Brown was like that for me. He and Richard Zanuck had the most successful partnership in all of Hollywood and were wonderful mentors to me on my first two pictures. In the middle of shooting Jaws, David said to me, ‘No matter my age,  I will always feel 30!’ I’ve been living by that ever since.”
