Paris Hilton arrested on cocaine charge

Paris-320.jpgImage Credit: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic.comParis Hilton was released Saturday from a Las Vegas jail at 2:45 a.m. after being arrested late Friday night on suspicion of cocaine possession, Las Vegas police confirmed to EW.com.

The 29-year-old socialite-heiress was a passenger in a black Cadillac Escalade from which a traffic officer noticed “an obvious odor of a controlled substance,” according to Public Information officer Marcus Martin. The traffic officer stopped the vehicle, and its driver, Hilton’s boyfriend Cy Waits, allegedly admitted that he was the smoker of the substance. While searching the SUV, police discovered that Hilton had an unspecified amount of what was later identified as cocaine. Hilton was arrested and released from the Clark County Detention Center on her own recognizance, while Waits, who manages a trio of Vegas nightclubs, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. Waits was released Saturday afternoon after posting a $2,000 bail, according to the AP.

Hilton’s lawyer, David Chesnoff, released the following statement: “This matter will be dealt with in the courts, not in the media, and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law.”

This is Hilton’s third drug-related arrest in recent memory. In July, while attending a World Cup match in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Hilton was removed from the stadium by local police and arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession. The charges were dropped. Later that month, Hilton was detained by police at an airport in Corsica, France, after she was caught with a small amount of marijuana. No charges were filed in the incident.

While known primarily as a favorite subject of celebrity gossip magazines and websites, Hilton has had some success as a star and producer of reality TV shows, including Paris Hilton’s My New BFF and The Simple Life, which co-starred her then-BFF Nicole Richie. Hilton’s acting credits include the 2005 horror film House of Wax and appearances on Supernatural, The O.C., and Veronica Mars.
