Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds have signed on to voice the caveman stars of the upcoming DreamWorks Animation 3-D comedy The Croods, reports Variety. The movie will focus on a prehistoric cave dweller (Cage) forced to uproot his family when an earthquake destroys their home. In their travels, the clan comes across a wanderer (Reynolds) who introduces them to some modern ideas. The pic is slated for March 30, 2012.

SNL back on Feb. 27, Jennifer Lopez to host
NBC has announced that SNL will return on February 27 with Jennifer Lopez pulling her second double-duty spot as host and musical guest (a feat she previously pulled off in February of 2001). The star will be plugging her return to the big screen in The Back-Up Plan and her new album Love? (both slated for April).
'The Messenger' director tapped for Kurt Cobain biopic
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has hired Oren Moverman (The Messenger) to write and direct a Kurt Cobain biopic, based partially on the 2001 book Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain. The rocker’s widow, Courtney Love, optioned the rights to the book and will serve as an executive producer on the movie.
The History Channel gets into 'Top Gear'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The History Channel is eyeing a stateside remake of the hit UK show Top Gear. The project — comprised of races, demolitions, and other car-related segments — was previously in development at NBC, but was dropped after Knight Rider bombed for the network in 2008.
Disney invites moviegoers to 'Prom'
After striking gold with the High School Musical franchise, Disney is developing Prom, a big-screen comedy about a group of high schoolers getting ready for an all-important school dance, reports Variety. In an effort to keep costs at a minimum, the pic — which is already being touted as a potential franchise — may star a cast of unknowns.
John Schneider tees up 'Back Nine' for Spike TV
John Schneider (The Dukes of Hazzard, The Secret Life of the American Teenager) is set to star in Back Nine, a Spike TV pilot about a washed-up golf champ reduced to playing small-time tournaments to re-qualify for the PGA, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The character will have a sex-addict caddy named Tiger — a role that Spike execs say was created long before the recent Tiger Woods scandal.
Fashion designer Alexander McQueen, 40, found dead in London home

He was 40 years old. “At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family,” reads a message on the official website of the designer’s company. Rumors have begun to circulate online, but officials say the the cause of death remains unknown. “We’re devastated and I hope you understand that out of respect to his family and his colleagues we’re not going to be making any further statement,” said the designer’s spokewsoman in a statement.
McQueen rose to fame in the ’90s, earning a reputation for his impeccably tailored avant-garde looks and iconoclastic fashion shows. He got a relatively traditional start on Savile Row, designing for Givenchy before creating his own label under the Gucci umbrella in 2001. McQueen’s designs were red-carpet regulars, especially on Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss, and Naomi Campell. A few of McQueen’s most famous works include Gwyneth Paltrow’s see-through 2002 Oscar dress and the “armadillo” shoes worn by Lady Gaga in her 2009 “Bad Romance” music video.
Since his death was announced earlier today, several celebrities have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the designer.

'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' remake in the works
Universal has signed writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith (The Ugly Truth, The House Bunny) to pen an update of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, reports Variety. Based on the 1978 Broadway hit, the original 1982 big-screen musical starred Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds as a madame and a sheriff trying to save their local whorehouse. The new version will include musical numbers, although the studio won’t say whether the original show’s songs (including the Parton-penned “I Will Always Love You”) will be revived.
'Shaq Vs.' back for season two
ABC has renewed Shaq Vs., the reality series in which basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal competes against star athletes in their chosen sport, reports Variety. In the first season, Shaq swam against Michael Phelps and boxed Oscar de la Hoya, losing both times. According to one exec, the show’s second season will likely see Shaq competing in non-sports challenges like spelling bees and competitive eating.
Phil Harris memorial planned for Discovery
Variety reports that The Discovery Channel is planning a tribute to the late Capt. Phil Harris, a fisherman who starred on the network’s reality hit Deadliest Catch. Harris, 53, died Tuesday after suffering a stroke on Jan. 29 in Alaska. He will still appear in the show’s upcoming sixth season (coming this April), which started filming last November.
