Alec Baldwin to Charlie Sheen: 'Sober up'

Filed under: News, TV and tagged:

Alec Baldwin is offering some words of wisdom to Charlie Sheen: “Sober up… and get back on TV, if it’s not too late.” In an article on The Huffington Post, the 30 Rock star shares his personal experience of being removed from the Hunt for Red October franchise, drawing a parallel to Sheen’s recent firing from Two and a Half Men. Baldwin also sets out a plan of action to help Sheen get back in the good graces of the public and his former coworkers. “Take a nap. Get a shower. Call [Two and a Half Men co-creator] Chuck [Lorre]. Go on Letterman and make an apology. Write a huge check to the B’Nai Brith. And then beg for your job back,” he writes, adding, “P.S…. buy [Jon] Cryer a really nice car.”

The makers of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark were fined $12,600 today for workplace safety violations issued by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, reports the Associated Press. The show, which has dealt with multiple cast injuries, is charged with putting its performers in danger of “the hazards of falls or being struck during flying routines.” Last month, the New York State Department of Labor issued two safety violations to the $65 million production.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' box office rises above the critics

Filed under: News and tagged:

Grosses for Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark went up 3 percent last week despite pans from news outlets like The New York Times and Variety, according to data posted on Broadway World. The show, which is still in previews until March 15, grossed $1.3 million during the week ending Feb. 13, putting it just behind box office champ Wicked at $1.4 million. This was the first week of sales after Spider-Man was hit with scathing reviews in several major publications on Feb. 7. Yesterday, the New York State Department of Labor issued two safety violations for the troubled musical, which has seen four of its performers injured since rehearsals began late last year.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' gets new high-flying finale

Filed under: News and tagged:

Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has a new finale of aerial acrobatics performed by Spider-Man/Peter Parker, a rep for the show confirms to EW. The new stunts have replaced the show’s old ending, in which a curtain dropped abruptly from the ceiling after a bit of dialogue between Peter Parker and Mary Jane. Earlier this month, producer Michael Cohl told EW that director Julie Taymor, writer Eric Berger, and composers Bono and the Edge were convening to reassess the musical in the weeks before its official opening night, now scheduled for March 15 after three lengthy postponements. (The show was originally scheduled to debut on Dec. 21 of last year.)

Despite accident-plagued preview performances and mixed early reviews, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark continues to sell strongly at the Broadway box office, grossing $1.25 million during the week ending Jan. 16.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' beats 'Wicked' at Broadway box office

Filed under: News and tagged:

After taking a beating in the press for its accident-prone stunts, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has some good news to share: The $65 million Julie Taymor-directed musical was Broadway’s biggest grosser last week with a $1,588,514 haul, besting evergreen hit Wicked by a mere $58. Both shows played at 100 percent capacity, though Spider-Man‘s Foxwoods Theater is slightly larger than Wicked‘s Gershwin Theater. Since its first preview on Nov. 28, Spider-Man has proven its ability to draw crowds despite controversies over its safety and tepid advance reviews. Time will tell if the high-profile show can hang onto the top spot; Spider-Man is still in previews leading up to its official Feb. 7 opening, while Wicked has been a Broadway stalwart since 2003.

Eva Longoria sued by restaurant co-investor

Filed under: News, TV and tagged: ,

Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria is being sued for allegedly charging an illegal interest rate on her $1 million investment in her restaurant group, Beso. According to a lawsuit filed by co-investor Mali Nachum in Encino, Calf., the company failed to bring action against Longoria after being informed that the star’s eight percent interest rate allegedly violates California law and would eventually have been worth $4.6 million. Nachum is asking for no less that $4 million in damages. “This is a desperate reaction in a lawsuit without merit by prior partners who, through their unauthorized and fraudulent actions, required Eva Longoria to seek reorganization protection through bankruptcy court in Nevada,” said a rep for Longoria in a statement. The first Beso restaurant opened in Hollywood in 2008, followed by a second restaurant and a club, Eve, in Las Vegas. (Beso Las Vegas and Eve recently filed for bankruptcy.)
