Author Colum McCann assaulted in New Haven

Novelist Colum McCann was assaulted outside a New Haven hotel on Saturday night.

According to the New Haven Register, witnesses stated that the author of the National Book Award-winning Let the Great World Spin tried to help a woman involved in a dispute. The woman’s companion may be the assailant, New Haven Police Office David Hartman said in a statement on Wednesday.

McCann, 49, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and treated for significant but not life-threatening facial injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

McCann, whose most recent novel is 2013’s Transatlantic, lives in New York and was in Connecticut to address a Sunday event at Southern Connecticut State University, which he missed as a result of his injuries. McCann’s wife, Allison Hawke, told the Associated Press that he is getting dental work and is unable to comment.
