Nine seriously injured in Ringling Bros. circus accident

Nine performers were seriously injured in an accident at a Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus show at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Sunday.

A platform holding up eight acrobats collapsed during the performance, sending the acrobats falling 25 to 40 feet to the ground and hitting a dancer on the ground below.

According to the Associated Press, sources say none of the injuries are life-threatening. “Everybody’s doing fine, everybody’s at the hospital, everybody’s conscious, everybody’s doing pretty well,” Roman Garcia, general manager of the Legends show the acrobats were performing in, said after the accident.

A spokeswoman from Rhode Island Hospital, Jill Reuter, told the AP that 11 patients were admitted, with one of those patients being in critical condition. The cause of the collapse isn’t known yet.

The two remaining Legends shows scheduled for May 4 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center were canceled after the accident.
