The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says deputies made a deadly mistake when they shot a man during a West Hollywood hostage situation.
Thirty-year-old John Winkler, who according to several reports had worked as a production assistant for Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, died at a hospital Monday night.
A sheriff’s statement Thursday says Winkler was visiting an apartment when he and two other men were taken hostage at knifepoint by Alexander McDonald. Authorities say McDonald began stabbing the men in a rage, including his roommate.
Arriving deputies say a blood-covered man with a neck wound rushed out of the apartment followed by Winkler, who appeared to be lunging at him, and the deputies opened fire.
The stabbing victim was shot in the leg. He’s in stable condition. A second stabbing victim was treated and released. McDonald is charged with murder and attempted murder. He remains jailed.
“Comedy Central and Tosh.0 extend their deepest condolences to the family of John Winkler,” the cable network said in a statement Friday. “We only had the privilege of working with him for a short while and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends during this tragic time.”
