L’Wren Scott, 49, a model turned designer who dressed stars including Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Amy Adams, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment building this morning, according to People.

Early reports say that Scott’s assistant found her hanging by a silk scarf, and that there were no signs of foul play. Scott was known for her clean-lined, glamorous gowns; her unusual height (she was 6’3″); and her longtime relationship with Mick Jagger, whom she began dating in 2001.

A spokesman for Jagger, 70, who is currently on tour with the Rolling Stones in Australia, said that he was “completely shocked and devastated” by the news.

Scott, born Luann Bambrough, was raised by adoptive Mormon parents in Utah and moved to Paris as a teenager after being scouted by famed photographer Bruce Weber at a Calvin Klein photo shoot. After a successful modeling career, she moved to California and segued into styling for print magazines and films, including Eyes Wide Shut and Ocean’s Thirteen.

Her eponymous fashion line, launched in 2006, was worn by A-List actresses (Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez) and First Ladies (Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni Sarkozy) who migrated to her for her elegant, close-fitting dresses and separates in luxe fabrics.

Though her work was generally priced out of the range of most women, Scott brought her look to the masses last year with a Banana Republic holiday collection. Just weeks ago, she canceled a scheduled presentation of her line during London Fashion week.
