Reese Witherspoon issues statement -- apology -- about her arrest

Following her arrest on Friday for disorderly conduct in the wake her husband Jim Toth’s DUI arrest, actress Reese Witherspoon has issued a statement through her publicist.

“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”

As EW reported earlier, Witherspoon was arrested and briefly jailed on Friday after her husband, Hollywood agent Jim Toth, was pulled over in Atlanta early Friday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and arrested on a DUI charge. Witherspoon, a passenger in the car, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge.

According to Variety, which first broke the story, Witherspoon was handcuffed after disobeying the arresting officer’s instructions to stay in the vehicle and became increasingly agitated. The report added that according to the officer, “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don’t need to know your name.’ … Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am.'”

Both Witherspoon, 37, and Toth, 42, were released on bond Friday morning and a court appearance is scheduled for Monday morning in Atlanta Municipal Court. The couple is in Atlanta shooting her film The Good Lie.
