Clint Eastwood endorses Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney now has Dirty Harry on his side.

The Oscar-winning director, venerable actor, and former mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif,  endorsed the Republican presidential candidate on Friday while appearing at a Sun Valley, Idaho fundraiser for Romney, according to Reuters.

Telling reporters that he was supporting the all-but-official nominee because “the country needs a boost somewhere,” Eastwood praised Romney’s tax plan in his remarks, declaring that the former Massachusetts governor will “restore a decent tax system … so there’s a fairness and people are not pitted against each other.” He also applauded his physical attributes, quipping that when he first saw Romney in ads during the 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial race, he thought, “God, this guy, he’s too handsome to be governor. But it does look like he could be president.”

Said Romney of this high-wattage endorsement: “He just made my day.”

Back in February, Eastwood starred in an inspirational “Halftime in America” Super Bowl commercial for Chrysler, which many interpreted as a tacit endorsement of President Obama. Eastwood responded by telling Fox News that he was “certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama” and was “not supporting any politician at this time.”

In the 2008 presidential election, Eastwood publicly backed the Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain.
