Irish actor David Kelly, most recently known for his role as Grandpa Joe in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has died after a short illness at the age of 82.
A veteran actor of both the stage and screen, Kelly is well known to Irish audiences for his role in the dramatic mini-series Strumpet City, and to British ones for his role as Mr. O’Reilly in Fawlty Towers. He earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in 1998 for Waking Ned Devine and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2005.
Kelly’s career spanned 50 years, with numerous parts in film, television and the Irish theater. In his last film role, he played a guard in 2007’s Stardust opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro.
In its obituary, the Irish Times called Kelly the “grand old man of Irish acting.”
