Legendary Emmy-winning comedy writer, director, and producer Hal Kanter has passed away at the age of 92 due to complications from pneumonia, according to the Los Angeles Times. Kanter had a career that spanned nearly seven decades and his unparalleled resume included creating the groundbreaking NBC sitcom, Julia, working as a writer and producer on Chico and the Man, and, perhaps most notably, writing the Oscar telecast for nearly 33 years. Two of Kanter’s three Emmys came from his work on the Academy Awards. (His first Emmy was for the variety program The George Gobel Show.)

In addition to the indelible mark he left on television, which also included creating The Jimmy Stewart Show and working briefly as an executive producer on All in the Family, Kanter wrote for the big screen as well. His film credits include writing Road to Bali, Money From Home, Artists and Models, Pocket Full of Miracles, and The Rose Tattoo, which he collaborated on with Tennessee Williams. Kanter stepped behind the camera on occasion, directing the 1957 Elvis Presley drama Loving You, which he also co-wrote.

A recipient of the Writers Guild of America’s Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television, Kanter penned his memoir So Far, So Funny: My Life in Show Business in 1999 and was described by the LA Times as being “the go-to wit to act as master of ceremonies or speak at Hollywood functions and other events.” Carl Reiner echoed the sentiment, telling the Times, “What a dear man. He was considered one of the wits of the industry; there’s no question about it. Any time he was called upon, he always could make the audience laugh.”

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are expecting... again

Filed under: Celebrity Babies!, News, TV and tagged:

Make that 20 Kids and Counting. Arkansan supermom Michelle Duggar announced to People that she and husband, Jim Bob, are expecting their 20th child in April 2012. That due date makes for a 24-year spread between the newest Duggar and his or her oldest sibling, Joshua, who has two children of his own with wife, Anna. There is some legitimate concern over this pregnancy as the Duggars’ most recent child, 23-month-old Josie, had to be kept in intensive care after she was born three months premature and weighing only 1 pound, 6 ounces.

Michelle confirmed to the magazine that she’s under the care of a high-risk pregnancy doctor. She said she’s on a special diet and added, “We are just going to do the best we can. I am taking a nap every day, and we are just taking good care.” The Duggars will find out the baby’s sex in late December and, due to complications from Josie’s emergency delivery, Michelle’s C-section will be scheduled this time around.

Michael Jackson’s doctor was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter after a trial that painted him as a reckless caregiver who administered a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic that killed the pop star. The verdict against Dr. Conrad Murray marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture’s most shocking tragedies — the death of the King of Pop on the eve of the singer’s heavily promoted comeback concerts.

Murray sat stone-faced and showed little reaction at the verdict. There was a shriek in the courtroom when the verdict was read, and the crowd erupted outside the courthouse. The judge polled the jury, and each juror answered “yes” when asked whether their verdict was guilty. The jury deliberated less than nine hours. The Houston cardiologist, 58, faces a sentence of up to four years in prison. He could also lose his medical license.  READ FULL STORY »

Verdict reached in Conrad Murray case

Filed under: Crime, Music, News and tagged: , ,

A jury reached a verdict Monday in the involuntary manslaughter case against Michael Jackson’s doctor. Court officials said it would be read at 1 p.m. PST.

During the six-week trial, prosecutors depicted Dr. Conrad Murray as a reckless physician who abandoned Jackson while he was under the effects of the powerful anesthetic propofol on June 25, 2009. Attorneys for the Houston-based cardiologist countered that Jackson was addicted to the drug and self-administered the fatal dose when Murray left his bedroom.

Murray agreed to become Jackson’s personal physician as the singer prepared for a series of comeback concerts in 2009.

Murray did not testify during the trial but previously acknowledged to police that he gave Jackson propofol and other sedatives on the morning the singer died. READ FULL STORY »

Kim Kardashian visits Kris Humphries in Minnesota

Over the weekend, Kim Kardashian flew to Minnesota, according to People, to visit her husband Kris Humphries, whom she filed for divorce from last week after 72 days of marriage. The People report also cites a source that said the two planned to meet with the pastor who married them as well.

The 31-year-old reality star recently returned from a trip to Australia, where she told the press that the whole ordeal makes her “kind of want to step back a little bit [from the spotlight].”

While Kardashian was en route to Minnesota to visit Humphries, Saturday Night Live was skewering their split — and the media blitz which has followed– in a skit called “Kim’s Fairytale Divorce.” While there’s no word on whether Kim had seen the segment, her family, who were also parodied in the sketch, seemed to get a kick out of it. Khloe Kardashian tweeted, “Ha! I just saw the SNL skit they did and I could not stop laughing…. LOL”, to which Kourtney Kardashian responded, “I peed! The @KrisJenner was classic.”

Lindsay Lohan serves four hours of jail sentence before being released

Well, that didn’t take very long at all. After being sentenced 30 days for violating probation, People reports that Lindsay Lohan was in jail for just four hours before being released early Monday morning.

Why was she let out so early? Overcrowding — it is not uncommon for California inmates to serve roughly 10 percent of their sentence. As explained by People, there is a federal mandate in which “nonviolent offenders are routinely sent home early after serving only a fraction of their sentences.” (Last year Lohan served just 13 days of a 90-day sentence thanks to good behavior and overcrowding.)

Lohan isn’t completely off the hook. The troubled star, who is currently not allowed to leave the country and can only leave California for work reasons, will now have to complete a total of 53 days of community service at Los Angeles county morgue and 18 psychotherapy sessions by March 29. If Lohan successfully follows through with these demands, the court will terminate her probation. If she is again found in violation, she could wind up sentenced to another 270 days.

Andy Rooney so dreaded the day he had to end his signature 60 Minutes commentaries about life’s large and small absurdities that he kept going until he was 92 years old.

Even then, he said he wasn’t retiring. Writers never retire. But his life after the end of “A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney” was short: He died Friday night, according to CBS, only a month after delivering his 1,097th and final televised commentary.

Conrad Murray trial now in the hands of the jury

Filed under: Crime, News and tagged:

The trial of Michael Jackson’s doctor was transformed Thursday into a contest between the superstar and the physician, with a prosecutor saying Dr. Conrad Murray killed his patient and a defense lawyer blaming Jackson for his own death.

Prosecutor David Walgren called Murray a liar and an opportunist who put his own welfare before that ofJackson.

Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff cast Murray as a victim of Jackson’s celebrity, saying he would never have been charged with wrongdoing if his patient was someone other than Jackson.

“If it was anybody else, would this doctor be here today?” Chernoff asked during his closing argument at the involuntary manslaughter trial of Murray.

The case later went to the jury, with deliberations set to begin Friday.  READ FULL STORY »

Conrad Murray trial: Prosecution makes closing arguments

Filed under: Crime, News and tagged:

A prosecutor told jurors that Michael Jackson’s doctor is responsible for the singer’s death and for leaving the pop superstar’s children without a father.

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren invoked Jackson’s children early in his final statements, saying that the singer had them in mind in his final days and it was a driving force behind his planned series of comeback concerts.

“For Michael’s children, this case will go on forever, because they do not have a father,” Walgren said. “They do not have a father because of the actions of Conrad Murray.” READ FULL STORY »
