An actor making his Broadway debut as Peter Parker during matinees of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has been injured during a performance but is expected to return to fly again.

Matthew James Thomas was rushed to a hospital after being hurt offstage during Act 2 on Wednesday afternoon. Show spokesman Rick Miramontez said Thursday he’ll be back for his next scheduled performance Saturday.

Reeve Carney plays Peter Parker during the week’s other six shows. He was at the theater and finished the performance. Details about Thomas’ injury weren’t immediately released.

Thomas’ injury was first reported by the New York Post.

It was just the latest in a series of accidents that have left several actors in the stunt-heavy $75 million show hurt or hospitalized.

Bil Keane’s Family Circus comics entertained readers with a simple but sublime mix of humor and traditional family values for more than a half century. The appeal endured, the author thought, because the American public needed the consistency. Keane, who started drawing the one-panel cartoon featuring Billy, Jeffy, Dolly, P.J. and their parents in February 1960, died Tuesday at age 89 at his longtime home in Paradise Valley, near Phoenix. His comic strip is featured in nearly 1,500 newspapers across the country.

Jeff Keane, Keane’s son who lives in Laguna Hills, Calif., said that his father died of congestive heart failure with one of his other sons by his side after his conditioned worsened during the last month. All of Keane’s five children, nine grandchildren and great-granddaughter were able to visit him last week, Jeff Keane said. “He said, ‘I love you’ and that’s what I said to him, which is a great way to go out,” Jeff Keane said of the last conversation he had with his father. “The great thing is Dad loved the family so much, so the fact that we all saw him, I think that gave him great comfort and made his passing easy. Luckily he didn’t suffer through a lot of things.” READ FULL STORY »

Ellen DeGeneres named special envoy in global fight against AIDS

Filed under: News and tagged:

The Obama administration has announced $60 million in additional funding to fight AIDS transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, and a new special envoy to raise global awareness about the deadly disease: Ellen DeGeneres. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the actress will “bring her sharp wit and big heart, and her impressive TV audience and 8 million followers on Twitter” to support U.S. efforts to save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Clinton says the money will help scale up and assess new prevention strategies. She said Tuesday that more effective prevention methods were driving infections down, making it possible to treat more people. She said that is allowing health campaigners for the first time to “get ahead of the pandemic,” and make progress toward establishing an AIDS-free generation.

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

In the wake of Julie Taymor’s lawsuit against the producers of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark – alleging her creative rights were violated when she was outsted from the show, and that she has not been compensated for her work — lead producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris have released the following statement:

Since Ms. Taymor’s departure in March, we have repeatedly tried to resolve these issues. The production has indeed compensated Ms. Taymor for her contribution as a co-book writer. We look forward to a resolution in which everyone is properly compensated for their contribution to Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark.
