Judge grants Selena Gomez temporary restraining order

Filed under: Crime, News and tagged: ,

A judge has granted Selena Gomez a temporary restraining order from a man with a history of mental illness who police say threatened the singer-actress. Court records show the Wizards of Waverly Place star was granted the order Thursday in Burbank, which is north of downtown Los Angeles. Thomas Brodnicki is required to stay 100 yards away from Gomez and her workplace until a Nov. 4 hearing, when the order may be extended for three years. Gomez wrote in a sworn declaration that she is in “extreme fear” of Brodnicki.

The filings, first reported Monday by celebrity website TMZ, state police were notified by mental health workers that the 46-year-old had threatened to harm or kill the actress while on a psychiatric hold. Attempts to reach Brodnicki were unsuccessful.

Anti-Defamation League seeks apology from Susan Sarandon for calling Pope Benedict XVI a 'Nazi'

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged:

The Anti-Defamation League has called on Susan Sarandon to apologize for comments she reportedly made on Saturday in which she called Pope Benedict XVI a “Nazi.” During an interview at the Bay Street Theatre in Long Island, Newsday reports the Oscar-winning actress made her controversial comment while discussing her 1995 film Dead Man Walking, which was based on an anti-death-penalty book by Sister Helen Prejean. Sarandon remembered that she had sent a copy of the book to the pope. “The last one,” she said. “Not this Nazi one we have now.”

The Anti-Defamation League responded on Monday, asking Sarandon to apologize to the Catholic community and to anybody else she may have offended with her remarks. ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman issued the following statement:

We hope that Susan Sarandon will have the good sense to apologize to the Catholic community and all those she may have offended with this disturbing, deeply offensive and completely uncalled for attack on the good name of Pope Benedict XVI.

Ms. Sarandon may have her differences with the Catholic Church, but that is no excuse for throwing around Nazi analogies. Such words are hateful, vindictive and only serve to diminish the true history and meaning of the Holocaust.

It is unclear whether Sarandon was commenting generally about the Pope’s current policies or on his childhood experiences with the Nazi party during World War II. EW was unable to reach Sarandon for comment.

Halle Berry stalker will stand trial, says judge

Filed under: Crime, Movies, News and tagged: ,

A judge ruled Monday that a man charged with stalking Halle Berry should stand trial on two charges filed after he was repeatedly seen on the actress’ property earlier this year. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Melissa Widdifield issued her ruling after hearing from two witnesses called during a preliminary hearing to show some of evidence against Richard A. Franco, who has pleaded not guilty to burglary and stalking charges. He was charged after police arrested him outside Berry’s home in July after he was seen on the property three times in three days.

Los Angeles police detective John Gregozek testified that when Franco was caught, he was carrying a key to Berry’s guesthouse, where the Oscar-winning actress has her beauty salon and some of her wardrobe. Gregozek said Franco apparently obtained the key on July 10, when he entered the house for about 20 seconds after Berry left the salon area to go to her kitchen. Franco was standing outside her kitchen door when Berry spotted him and locked the door and called police. READ FULL STORY »

Zachary Quinto comes out as 'a gay man'

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Though he’s been cagey about his sexuality in the past, Star Trek star Zachary Quinto refers to himself as “a gay man” in an interview with New York magazine about his new film Margin Call. While speaking about his recent Broadway stint in Angels in America, Quinto remarked, “As a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.” Quinto will next be seen playing a gay interior designer on FX’s American Horror Story.

UPDATE: Quinto has written a blog entry on his official website about his decision to come out. He was inspired to do so after the highly publicized suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer.

when i found out that jamey rodemeyer killed himself – i felt deeply troubled.  but when i found out that jamey rodemeyer had made an it gets better video only months before taking his own life – i felt indescribable despair.  i also made an it gets better video last year – in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time.  but in light of jamey’s death – it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it – is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.  our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country.  gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying.  parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance.  we are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world.  we are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government.  i believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society – and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action.  jamey rodemeyer’s life changed mine.  and while his death only makes me wish that i had done this sooner – i am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me.  now i can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world.  that – i believe – is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other.

Expert witness: Conrad Murray caused Michael Jackson's death

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

A UCLA sleep expert described Dr. Conrad Murray’s use of a cocktail of drugs on Michael Jackson as “unethical, disturbing and beyond comprehension.” The combination of drugs used as Jackson struggled to fall asleep on the day he died was a “recipe for disaster” and ultimately caused his death, Dr. Nader Kamangar testified Thursday.

Under questioning by Murray’s attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, the witness was asked to tell jurors what he knew about the events of June 25, 2009, the day of Jackson’s death. “To summarize, Mr. Jackson was receiving very inappropriate therapy in a home setting, receiving very potent therapies without monitoring,” Kamangar said.

He said diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) and midazolam (Versed) were given to the sleepless star during a 10-hour period throughout the night and morning. “This cocktail was a recipe for disaster,” Kamangar said. READ FULL STORY »

Chris Tucker facing foreclosure on Florida mansion

Filed under: News and tagged:

Court records show comedian Chris Tucker is facing foreclosure on his multimillion-dollar mansion in central Florida. Records show SunTrust Bank filed papers against the California resident with Lake County courts earlier this week. According to documents, Tucker bought the 10,000-square-foot lakefront home for $6 million in 2007 — before the housing market crashed. The bank claims he still owes more than $4.4 million, but the county property appraiser has the home currently assessed at $1.6 million.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the house is located in the Bella Collina development, a 1,900-acre community overlooking lakes and a championship golf course.
