Actor Will Smith and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson for dinner and Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas for post-meal canapes. President Barack Obama waded into the domain of the stars Monday as he hit the California fundraising circuit in one of his busiest donor outreach trips of the season.

Smith, in an elegant three-piece suit, and Johnson, the standout former point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers, were guests at the home of producer James Lassiter and his wife, Mai. About 40 contributors, including actress Hilary Duff, contributed $35,800 each for a cozy dinner and a chance to chat with the president. Obama, eager to reinvigorate his supporters, ticked off his administration’s accomplishments. “Sometimes I think people forget how much has gotten done,” the president said as he urged his backers to rally once again, at the same time joking, as he often does, that he is older and grayer now. “This election won’t be as sexy as the first one.” READ FULL STORY »

Country legend Loretta Lynn hospitalized with pneumonia

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Country star Loretta Lynn was forced to cancel a pair of concerts this weekend because she is in the hospital. According to her official website, the 76-year-old singer of “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “Don’t Come Home A’Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind)” is in the early stages of pneumonia and according to her doctors requires rest.

The hospital stint forced her to cancel shows in Ashland, Kentucky and Durham, North Carolina, though she doesn’t expect to be down for long. “Loretta is doing well and is disappointed but feels confident she will be ready for upcoming November dates,” said the site.

This isn’t the first time this year Lynn has had to postpone performances because of health issues. According to People, she had to skip shows in August because of knee surgery and also missed a pair of appearances after being hospitalized with heat exhaustion.

Lynn, whose astonishing personal narrative was adapted into the 1980 Sissy Spacek film Coal Miner’s Daughter, received a career resurgence in the past decade thanks to Van Lear Rose, her award-winning 2004 album produced by Jack White.

Will Lindsay Lohan go to jail following morgue snafu? It's likely, experts say

Lindsay Lohan is no stranger to jail. After all, the Mean Girls actress spent time behind bars several times between 2007 and 2010, thanks to a DUI arrest and several probation violations. (And that’s if you don’t count house arrest, which she was sentenced to serve earlier this year after being convicted of misdemeanor grand theft.) But following her latest setback — Lohan’s probation was revoked after she was let go from court-appointed volunteer work at the Downtown Women’s Center — media and fans alike are left wondering whether she’s set for another stint in the slammer, particularly after the actress was turned away from the L.A. County morgue Thursday for being late to court-ordered duty. After being given so many chances to improve her image, will the court finally turn its back on Lohan and send her directly to jail at her Nov. 2 hearing?

Though courts typically try to be lenient towards those serving probation, Lohan’s history certainly complicates matters for the actress, says Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Jonathan Kelman. Not only has she recently neglected to follow court orders, but she’s skipped DUI progress hearings and has failed drug tests in the past few years. (Her probation was previously revoked in 2010 after she admitted to failing a test.) “She’s making a mockery out of the system,” he tells EW. “She’s pushing so hard against the wall that eventually the court is going to push back….If you constantly keep mocking the court by not doing what you’re supposed to do, it’s a matter of time before she has to get sent to jail.” READ FULL STORY »

News Corp. agrees to Dowler family financial settlement in 'News of the World' phone hacking scandal

Filed under: Crime, News and tagged:

The U.K. division of News Corp. has agreed to pay £3 million (US $4.8 million) to family members of Milly Dowler who were deeply affected by the News of the World‘s hacking scandal, reports Bloomberg. According to a statement, News. Corp head Rupert Murdoch was personally involved in the negotiations of this, the largest payout of the entire months-long scandal, and is personally footing the bill for a £1 million charitable donation included in the settlement. The remaining two million pounds will go to the Dowlers, whose 13-year-old daughter Milly disappeared in 2002. NOTW reporters dramatically impeded the police investigation by erasing voicemails left on Milly’s cell phone and gave the Dowlers false hope that their daughter might still be alive. Acknowledged Murdoch, “The behavior that the News of the World exhibited towards the Dowlers was abhorrent.”

Lindsay Lohan shows up for morgue duty, says rep

Filed under: Crime, News and tagged:

And early this time! Though Lindsay Lohan was turned away from her court-appointed volunteer work at the L.A. County Morgue Thursday after she showed up late, the actress made sure she found her way to the facility Friday. The actress’ rep released the following statement: “Lindsay arrived at the L.A. County Morgue at 5:35 a.m. this morning. She is sitting in her car waiting for them to open. Her orientation starts at 7.”

On Thursday, Lohan blamed her tardiness on her inability to figure out how to enter the building. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter, however, told reporters, “She’s been here before, and she was given directions, and, as far as we know, she knows how to get here.”

Lohan’s next hearing, which will determine whether or not she’s sent back to jail for probation violation, is scheduled for Nov. 2.

Michael Jackson could not have killed himself with propofol, says expert witness

Filed under: News and tagged:

An expert on the powerful anesthetic propofol told jurors Thursday there was no way Michael Jackson could have caused his own death by swallowing the drug — a theory defense attorneys had at one point indicated could become a centerpiece of their case.

Dr. Steven Shafer, an expert on propofol, said it’s impossible for the drug to enter the bloodstream in any sizeable amount if it is swallowed. READ FULL STORY »
