Andy Whitfield, who starred in the first season of Starz’ Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Sydney, Australia. Spartacus was the Wales native’s first big break; most of his previous work was in Australian television.

Whitfield was diagnosed 18 months ago while preparing for the second season of Spartacus. Starz announced in January that Liam McIntyre, another Australian actor, would take over the role.

In a statement, Whitfield’s wife Vashti called her husband a “beautiful young warrior” who died on a “sunny Sydney morning” in her arms.

“No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother,” said Spartacus creator Steven DeKnight on Twitter.

In statements on Sunday night, Lucy Lawless and Starz paid tribute to Andy Whitfield.

My heart just broke a little :(

    • Jose

      Same.

      • Trish

My cousin passed away of the same disease a month ago, he had just turned 49 and left behind his wife and 11 year son and a 9 year daughter. It was awful to see him go though that. My heart goes out to Andy’s family.

      • sfday

EW MUST do something about these posts – so disrespectful…

      • sfday

The “I wanna share some good news with you” ones I mean

      • @sfday

How was that a “I wanna share some good news with you” post? Trish said her cousin passed away…or were you referring to something else?

      • Mo

Poor guy. This is very sad. I wasn’t a fan of the show, but he was good in it and he seemed like a nice guy, and to have this happen when everything was looking up for him is extra sad. I’m really sorry for your family’s loss, too, Trish. My husband and children are around those ages, so it gave me a bit of an extra jolt.

      • amelia in portland

Me too. The statement from his wife was beautiful. Because of Andy Whittfield I loved the show Sparticus.

      • Katyo

@@sfday – the original post had one of those spam paragraphs at the end, about the “beautiful rich cousin met a soul mate on online dating site” crap. That part has since been removed, it appears. Guess EW does moderate a bit after all.

      • Olivya

Mine too. My condolences to his family and friends. He was a fantastic actor and had many fans.

      • Chelsea

What a painful, painful shock. I read a few months back that he had been doing better. Heartbroken.

    • cindy

this news just breaks my heart

    • Shellibellie

so very sad, hate to say it but when I had heard that it came back and he had to leave the show, I kinda knew he was in for it. My MIL died from the exact same thing as well, she was 42.

goes to show you the young heathly ones can die from a disease just like anyone else. so sad to hear about his family and children.

    • Deborah

My heart just broke a lot. I was so hoping Andy would pull through. Deepest condolences to his wife and family.

    • Carlos

I am sadden and shocked to hear this news. I came to this site to comment on ‘True Blood’ finale eposide. Andy was a young hot attractive guy and he passed away at such an early age. I am depressed after hearing of his death.

    • Nicole

I just cried like a fool. He was just coming into his own. I’m so sad for his family and friends. However, if there is any bright side to this, Andy will forever be remembered as a legend in his prime. I will always rememeber him as a man who invoked passion. You will be sorely missed Andy.

    • Xerxes 2010

Your’s broke a little. I am cutting off my cable, no need for it now. I’ll get it again…maaaybe, depends on how the replacement works.

    • harry

      R.I.P. Andy, we love you!

    • daisy

my butt just pooped a little

    • Ellen

I’m surprised it hurts as much as it does. I loved his Spartacus. In fact, I just watched the first ep – The Red Serpent – again this weekend and now plan to watch the rest of the series again. What a star. He will indeed be missed.

    • plainjane

I didn’t know this actor; didn’t watch this how…but, my heart aches for his family. May God keep the family during this difficult time.

    • Robert Lopez

He was one of the good guys he can relax now

    • Ahmed

I am heart broken… it is a terrible loss. RIP Andy.

  • David

This is a very sad story, and my condolences to his family and friends.
It would also have been nice to be able to read this story without my computer screen being hijacked by a damn pop-up video about NBC’s fall schedule. I understand the need for advertising, but this is ridiculous. If ew.com continues to allow these intrusive ads, I’ll get my entertainment news online elsewhere.

    • Lola

In 100% agreement. While I know they need to pay the bills but this is ridiculous, especially considering the content of the story.

      • Joe

If you guys knew how online advertising worked you wouldn’t be complaining. EW uses ads from ad networks who provide site wide ad tags, ads aren’t targeted by specific posts so they don’t have control to not show popups etc on specific pages.

      • Wesley

Watching these from the start over the past few days, it appears that in the past few trndaig sessions you were holding onto your losing trades longer than in previous months perhaps a few negative/neutral days were messing up your mojo a little bit?Let’s see how things pan out in coming months. Looking forward to watching more

    • DiAZ

well said, i hate those GD ads too, i get them more on ew.com than anywhere else. they need to wise up!

      • Aman

i started to cry when i heard Andys death i loved him soolooooo much God bless him ill pray for him all the time we will remember him during our life. i desire a bright futur for his childs and his wife. love you Andy love you

    • Obvious

      Its called adblock. Try it.

      • Obviously

Adblock doesn’t work all the time.

Anyway I wish his family the best and He was too young to go.

      • Oblivious

It works if you know what to block. EW has a lot of junks ads.

Anyway, I wish his family the best too. Godspeed, good sir.

  • Hoboken Gladiator

You will be missed Spartacus. R.I.P Andy Whitfield.

    • kate middleton

Very sad. I had no idea he was in such bad shape. He was so young. Rest in peace, Andy.

  • Liv

Wow, I was under the impression he was going to recover. He was a true talent and I’m sure a wonderful person.

    • Tinuviel Undomiel

I thought he was recovering too. What a shame.

      • Liv

I just read on TVline that he had been recovering but had relapsed earlier this summer. I hadn’t heard about the relapse. Too bad, he was so young.

    • AltDave

That’s the last I had seen about Andy, that he was recovering. Reading that he died just shocked me into tears; hell, I’m tearing up again right now as I type. A good friend of mine died from lymphoma some years ago, and watching what he went through and his decline was devastating to all his family and friends. My heart breaks for Andy’s family and friends. Rest in peace, Andy, you WILL be remembered.

  • Lili

Oh no, what a sad news! Was strangely thinking about him and hoping he might come back :(

  • Tinuviel Undomiel

That’s terrible. He was a great actor and it’s a shame he died so young. Truly unexpected for me.

  • Soldier

God Bless. You will be remembered.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Oh God…I thought he was doing better. This sucks. RIP Andy

  • noggster

Mines too! I’ve never seen the show (I’ve always wanted to) but this is really sad. I feel bad for the family he left behind.

  • tg

    How horribly sad. F*ck cancer!!

    • Poppy

      Well said! RIP Andy.

  • MWeyer

Oh man, what a loss. He just imbued that part perfectly, hard to believe he’d be gone so soon.

  • Don

So sad, you will be missed. I too was hoping he would return.

  • P

Rest in Peace Andy…my condolences to your family and friends.

  • CG

My cousin had cancer and he survived. Thar’s a shame 39 is way tooo young to die. Prayers go out to Andy’s family at this sad time. RIP Andy at least you won’t be in pain anymore

  • JD

He was a wonderful actor and played the part of Spartacus most excellently. I am very sad on hearing of his passing.
