Disgraced fashion designer John Galliano was found guilty of making anti-Semitic comments by a French court, according to CNN. He was fined 6,000 euros, and one symbolic euro was awarded to each plaintiff, who claimed he insulted them in a Paris cafe during separate incidents in October and February. Though he could have faced six months in jail, Galliano was not sentenced to any prison time.
Galliano had been fired by Christian Dior after video surfaced showing him slurring anti-Semitic insults and praising Adolf Hitler.

“Freedom of speech” is not applicable to what constitutes a hate crime. You aren’t just entitled “to say anything”, if it hurts someone else, or if your comments are generalized toward some group. As a person frequently in the public eye, and who courts media scrutiny, Galliano in particular, should have known better.
Then that’s not freedom of speech. Hate crimes are only designations given to violent/criminal acts–when someone harms another person. It’s not a crime to be a racist.

What he did is against the law in France. Their law makes it a crime to incite racial hatred; public racist statements or verbal attacks on someone constiutes inciting such hatred. That’s not a limit on freedom of speech. Just like here in the US, we have freedom of speech but that does not mean the right to “say anything.” If you yell “fire” as a joke in a crowded theater, for example, you can be punished for that as well.
Like the person above have said, freedom of speech doesn’t mean you have carte blanche to say anything you want to say…yelling “fire” in a crowded arena will earn you a day in court and jail time, in the U.S., other countries’ mileage may vary.

For a proper comparison, please make yourself familiar with the National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie, Illinois Supreme Court case… in America, while we might have some speech regulated– such as shouting “fire,” under the Clear & Present Danger test– “hate speech” is perfectly legal and should remain so despite how distasteful it may be. In the Skokie case, the group dressed in white robes and marched through the street of a community largely of Holocaust survivors. Was it distasteful? Yes. But is it legal? Yes. The court ruled that there were plenty of actions the residents could take to avoid the hateful speech and that those who were practicing their speech were not responsible for the way the residents were threatening to react.
It’s also important to note that in the U.S. you can have your speech censored by private organizations or companies; just not the government. So, this comments section could legally “delete the racist comments that appear regularly on these boards.”
Here’s the deal just because the supreme court in american says its ok to go around calling people racial slurs and making bigoted statements, does not mean that thats whats best for the French or us in America for that matter. What is wrong with you people. Having the right to publicly state hate does NOT go hand in hand with other rights of speech. This is one of the many many reasons Its difficult for Americans to live and Travel abroad I am constatnly defending the average American citizen misconceptions here in France, it sickens me to see so many agreeing that this Sick person should be able to go around saying horrible things to people at the very least its harrasment.
