Steve Jobs resigns as Apple CEO

The man who put the world of entertainment in the palm of our hands has stepped down from his position as CEO of Apple.

The Wall Street Journal has posted a letter from Steve Jobs to the company’s board of directors and “the Apple community” at large, saying that he felt he could not longer serve in his position at the technology powerhouse. “I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.”

He recommended Tim Cook, COO of the company, be chosen as his successor. Cook has stepped into the role on a temporary basis when Jobs has been forced to take medical leave, first to battle pancreatic cancer in 2004, then for a liver transplant in 2009, and finally again this January, when health concerns again sidelined Jobs.

Jobs, 56, co-founded Apple in 1976, developing some of the world’s first home-use computers, and again revolutionized the technology world with iPods, iPhones, and iPads, which led to the creation of countless Apps and reduced CD and DVD collections — as well as entire Rolodexes — to those tiny, ubiquitous metal boxes we all carry with us. He was also the co-founder of another entertainment giant — the animation company Pixar.

The exact reason for Jobs’ resignation was not immediately clear, though his health has been a major factor in his ability to work in recent years.

Not good at all as a sign of his health…hope he makes as remarkable of a turnaround as his company did. All the best, Steve.

    • Jennifer

Given that he has pancreatic cancer, and that even the rare, somewhat controllable type he has is still almost always a death sentence, I suspect this is the beginning of the end. Hopefully not, for his sake and that of his family, but probably so.

      • Heidi

He looks very frail. Hopefully not having to split his focus between his work and his health, will benefit him greatly and he can have more time with his loved ones. After all, its just a job at the end of the day. It will go on without him. Health is priceless.

Meanwhile, another book production plant, one in my area, is closing down, costing 300 American jobs. I just wonder how many American jobs a iPad protects, being that they are produced overseas. If anyone knows the figures of American jobs produced via iPad and jobs by extension of it, I’d like to know those figures.

That’s why it helps to know how to fix your own crap.

  • Patty

He is definitely a man of many talents and has contributed much to the entertainment world. I am sure he thought long and hard before making this major decision. At this point in his life, his health should definitely be first priority in his life and career second.

  • Chris

I wish the best for him. He is a brilliant innovator.

  • Shiva

I’m sure they’ll find someone else to market overpriced crap to idiots.

    • Jack

Your the idiot. Apple products work. It’s that simple. They make great products that people want and that people keep. When was the last time anyone anywhere was specullating about the new samsung or HTC phone? I didn’t think so…..

      • Danielle

I guess you haven’t heard of the samsung galaxy S2 that everyone is talking about then. What shiva said wasn’t right but you don’t have to bring other phone companies into it.

      • Y u mad

        *You’re :3

      • Yeah…

Danielle’s right—at least 10 people have heard about the Galaxy S2, and six have firmly committed to buying, with one “maybe.”

    • ltchy

Uh, that would be iDiot and so be it! l love me my Apples! Suck it!

Go worship yourself, honey. When you turn a failing company around and make it into the world’s most valuable, and produce several of the most successful consumer products in history, then we’ll listen. Until then, you’re just an iTroll.

As someone who has benefitted from Apple products since 1986, all I can say is “Thanks, Steve. I wish you the best of health and hope you will continue to produce innovations for many years to come.” (Sent from my iPad.)

I know he has cancer. I hope he is alright

Here’s a response I wrote to Shirley regdiarng a similar question:You have two options in terms of how you want to use Word Press for your hybrid course.Option 1 (easier of the two): Create a course site and have your students register for the site as subscribers or contributors which enables them to comment and reply to postings. They will NOT have to have their own blog site. As a result, this is super easy to manage because there is not setup confusion among your students. As an instructor, all you’ll need to do is post to the site (e.g., journal prompts, questions, etc.), and your students will simply comment on those postings or reply to other students’ comments. If you want, I can help set up your course site for you, so all you’ll have to do is get your students to register for the site during the first week of the semester.Option 2 (more involved but more options): As an instructor, you’ll create a course site. Each of your students will create their own personal site. Students will use their own site for individual postings, and their peers, if registered on their site, can then comment and reply to comment. You can also syndicate each of your students personal site into the course site, making it a master site. The challenges for this option include helping each of your students create their own site, managing it, and troubleshoot. Unless you’re fairly comfortable with the Word Press user interface, this may not be a good option to begin with.

Steve Jobs’ adopted mother is called Clara Jobs (née Hagopian). She is Armenian. A lot of people don’t know that.

    • Kevin

      Who cares?

  • JD

    I feel sorry for Steve,
I wonder why life is so unkind to good human beings?
It seems though good people always have to suffer while bad people have to keep on living.
That is just a sympathy thought by looking at his picture.

    • Ap

Well…I’m unsure if you know him personally but he’s got his flaws just like the rest of us. Sure he’s revolutionized technology in the early 21st century (as I type this from my iPad) but he’s no saint.

      • Manuele

Don’t stop there! Take care of the funeral agrrnaements too! This way you have it the way you want it and the family is not stuck with decions at a terribly stressful time.krantcents recently posted..

Thanks for writing this. I raelly feel as though I know so much more about this than I did before. Your blog raelly brought some things to light that I never would have thought about before reading it. You should continue this, Im sure most people would agree youve got a gift.

    • Heidi

He is likely a lovely guy, but to balance it out, he put his career first and foremost, and we all benefitted from that. Maybe his family didn’t., Maybe his health didn’t . Time to switch it around.
