Michael Jackson trial won't show unreleased footage

Jurors in the Michael Jackson manslaughter trial will not see unreleased footage from This Is It, the documentary-concert film that documents the rehearsals for the tour of the same name that would have kicked off in July of 2009, reports the Associated Press. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor ruled Monday that the more than 100 hours of unreleased footage do not show the singer in poor health, and should be left out of the trial as they would offer no assistance to the defense. Attorneys for Dr. Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter, wanted to show four hours of the film, while prosecutors wished to show up to 12 hours. READ FULL STORY »
'Gossip Girl' star Leighton Meester sues mother
In a plot worthy of her own show, Gossip Girl star Leighton is suing her own mother, reports People. In the suit, Meester claims she was sending her mother Constance $7,500 each month to help take care of her ill younger brother, Lex. Instead of using the money to pay for medical care, Meester contends Constance spent it on plastic surgery, Botox, and other personal expenses. Upping the ante, Meester claims Constance planned to sue her for $3 million if her monthly allowance wasn’t increased to $10,000. It’s not Constance’s first run-in with the court system. In addition to a harassment lawsuit brought on earlier this year, she was convicted of smuggling marijuana from Jamaica to the U.S. in the 1980s, ultimately forcing her to give birth to Leighton from inside a halfway house.
'Zorba the Greek' director Michael Cacoyannis dead
Michael Cacoyannis, the Cyprus born-filmmaker who directed Anthony Quinn in the 1964 Oscar-nominated film, Zorba the Greek, died of complications from a heart attack and chronic respiratory problems on Monday at an Athens hospital, according to the Associated Press. He was 89.
After studying law in London and working for the BBC, Cacoyannis made his debut as a director with Windfall in Athens (1954). Two years later, he won a Golden Globe for best foreign language film for Stella, starring Melina Mercouri. His greatest hit would be Zorba, based on Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel and starring Anthony Quinn. Cacoyannis earned three Oscar nominations — for Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture — and the film won three trophies, including one for Best Supporting Actress (Lila Kedrova). His final film was The Cherry Orchard (1999), which starred Charlotte Rampling, Alan Bates, and a young Gerard Butler.
“His movies received awards at the most important film festivals in the world,” Greece’s culture minister Pavlos Geroulanos said. “His work became the vehicle that took Greek culture to every corner of the earth, and served as a source of inspiration for Greek and foreign artists.”
