'News of the World' scandal: Rupert Murdoch takes out apology ad

Blighted by the massive, ultimately career-ending, paper-shuttering phone hacking scandal at the News of the World, News International CEO Rupert Murdoch has taken ads in several British newspapers to apologize for his organization’s behavior, reports Britain’s The Guardian. Read Murdoch’s full apology and The Guardian‘s response after the jump.

In the signed ad — headlined “We are sorry.” — Murdoch wrote,

The News Of The World was in the business of holding others to account. It failed when it came to itself.

We are sorry for the serious wrongdoing that occurred.
We are deeply sorry for the hurt suffered by the individuals affected.
We regret not acting faster to sort things out.
I realize that simply apologising is not enough.

Our business was founded on the idea that a free and open press should be a positive force in society. We need to live up to this.

In the coming days, as we take further concrete steps to resolve these issues and make amends for the damage they have caused, you will hear more from us.

Sincerely,
Rupert Murdoch

The Guardian took Murdoch’s ad as particular vindication, given the paper’s years-long attempts to flush out the NOTW scandal. Editors posted their own response, saying, “We are happy to accept News International’s paid-for advertisements apologising for the reality of what our journalism revealed. The money we receive from News International will be donated to charity.”

Too late, damage has been done.

    • Questionable actions

Yes, agreed considering just a few weeks ago, Rupert Murdoch asserted in an interview that the phone hacking scandal was a minor problem implying that it would blow over quickly. How wrong he was and now this scandal is gonna ensnare his own son along with his former top lieutenants in the company. The only way to appease the growing British outrage is for Mr. Murdoch and his family to divest completely from the news business that includes print and TV.

Still waiting for that apology for FOX News…

Missing part of the “apology” (try to imagine an Australian accent):
…We are so sorry we got caught–we were so busy with making money, monopolizing worldwide media, and manipulating lives that we didn’t cover our tracks well with that unfortunate phone hack. Again sorry. BTW, sorry too about our blight on the American media and political landscape–it didn’t seem to matter very much in Australia when we did it at home that we didn’t think there would be people in America who’d take Fox News so seriously. It seemed funny after a case or two of Foster’s….Our bad….Sincerely, Rupert Murdock

you caonnt watch any Channel 5 unless you pay for the BBC, for which you will pay to the same degree as someone who watches the BBC relentlessly. I caonnt believe that is in keeping with libertarianism.BBB

One man (or family) should not have this much power/control of so much of the world’s media. They begin to think that they are invunrable. Sue the pants off him!!

Maybe he will land in jail like Conrad Black, who was for a time the third largest newspaper magnate in the world.
He was convicted of fraud and served time in jail.

. If you get your itonrmafion from other than con websites, you get to watch that video and make up your own mind, instead of having Roger Ailes make it up for you.

Something to “flush” describes those involved in this mess perfectly. Just as Murdoch’s crew flushed all decency, morality and ethics in pursuit of the all-mighty buck.

  • Saudi

He has a dangerous partner from Saudi Arabia called Alwaled bin Talal who is very self-interest, he is the first rich man in the middle east and has 4th on the world, does not care about human right and his father stole his own government when he was minister of finance

Looking forward to The Good Wife’s take on this one. It’s bound to happen. Most fun – the weird names they give to the made up companies they use in the show. So facebook became “chumhum”, let’s say NewsCorp becomes…”Herds Words?”

    Suggestions on a postcard.

The Guardian had a piece on Dirty Digger Jnr’s speech drbecising his anti-BBC arguments as a bit like a fox (no pun intended) arguing for the hen coop doors to be left open for the benefit of the farm.
