CNN is reporting that Betty Ford, the widow of late President Gerald Ford and a co-founder of an eponymous addiction center in Southern California, has died. She was 93.

Ford died Friday evening with family at her bedside. Her husband, Gerald Ford, passed in 2006. Nancy Reagan, the widow of late President Ronald Reagan, called Ford “an inspiration to so many through her efforts to educate women about breast cancer and her wonderful work at the Betty Ford Center.”

After leaving the White House in 1978, Ford entered the Long Beach Naval Hospital to be treated for alcohol and prescription painkiller abuse. She helped to open the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage in 1982.

She earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 and the Congressional Gold Medal eight years later.

    Raise a glass to Betty!

    • Jeff

She gave a place for all these contemporary untalented, spoiled little brats to go and get sober!

  • b

Betty Ford was 93 years old.

    • jeff (lowercase)

For a second I thought it said Betty White, and felt sad. However I agree with Jeff (upercase).
If she had founded a rehab clinic for non-famous people I’d be more impressed.

You do know that 95 percent of the patients were of the non-celebrity type. You only paid attention if a camera was there. Proof: Liz Taylor’s last husband, a blue-collar worker she met there.

Here’s hoping that EW writes more on this wonderful, courages woman (sp). She did so much for us.
I know her and Gerald are together.

I hate the way they say “Dead at X”. It sounds so harsh.

    • Milly

      I agree!!

    RIP First Lady Ford!

  • Andy

Why is it that our first ladies are so awesome yet their husbands get all the attention? Betty Ford was a great woman hopefully she’ll be reincarnated so she’ll be able to help the next generation too.

    • RD

Are you stupid? There’s no such thing as reincarnation. Her body will decompose, and eventually her memory will be lost to time. This is a fact of life.

      • Melaswen

Also a fact of life is that you are a judgemental douche. Billions of people believe in reincarnation. Believing in it doesn’t hurt anyone, what’s your problem?

      • dee123

        Billions?

      • My son is also named Bort

        India.

How do you know? Are you the definative authority because you’ve been dead before? Nobody knows. Only after we’re dead. Perhaps justice is that what happens after we’re dead is what we’ve believed in in life. In which case Andy will come back as something nice and your memory will fade away with time as you lie there decomposing.

God Bless Betty Ford Im embarrassed to say but I did not know that President Ford had died! For shame! (I hang my head)

  • jfms777

    Quite a woman. Highest praise.

  • Dee Jones

Yeah she was a great lady. I remember her son Steven Ford, who use to be on The Young & the Restless. He played Andy Richards. My heart goes out to him and the family. RIP BF

  • bilco

They correct the age in the story, but the URL still says she was 92.

    High class journalism.

  • Sharon

Amazing woman. She inspired many in the addition field. Before her there were few places to go to be treated, after her work they are everywhere. And that was just one part of what she did for the world. Very sad tonight.

  • Sharon

    Correction: ADDICTION field.. not ADDITION.

  • NOTentertainmentnews

Sad. But this is NOT entertainment news. Closest connection is that some addicted Hollywood stars used her clinic.

    • Loch Ness

      And that is close enough.

    • Zeba

Her Steven was an actor which is closer the entertainment industry than Casey Anthony and Jon Bonet Ramsey yet all the other entertainment outlets find it fit to cover those stories.

  • Scar2

She was also a feminist. Pretty courageous for a Republican First Lady in the 70s.

    • DRG

That’s because the Fords were from a time before the Republican party was taken over by the Flat Earth Society.

  • Good riddance You Ol B

Good riddance to that Warren Commission wifey.

I wonder what secrets she took to the grave, what being married to Jeerrry Ford. How about Jerry’s knowledge of the JFK assassination?
