Anna Nicole Smith estate loses big at Supreme Court

In a five-to-four decision, the US Supreme Court ruled against Anna Nicole Smith’s heirs on Thursday, putting an end to the 15 year battle over her former husband J. Howard Marshall’s estate, reports AFP. The deceased former Playmate’s lawyer and ex-boyfriend, Howard Stern, represented Smith’s daughter Dannielynn in the $88-million claim; a small fraction of the oil baron’s estimated $1.6 billion fortune. The court ruled in favor of Marshall’s heirs, despite a California bankruptcy court’s previous decision in favor of Smith. The troubled bombshell initially said she was promised $300 million, but her daughter will now most likely never see a cent.
Lindsay Lohan avoids jail time, has 'done everything right,' says lawyer

UPDATE: Lindsay’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, released the following statement about today’s proceedings: “Today the Court made clear that Lindsay is in compliance with the terms of her probation, the terms of her electronic monitoring and the laws, rules and regulations of the State of California. The Probation Department’s finding that Lindsay was in violation of probation, as well as its position that she should be subjected to testing were plainly erroneous.”
EARLIER REPORT: Sorry, haters: Lindsay Lohan has done no wrong, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ruled. After Lohan was found to have tested positive for alcohol, the actress was sent back to court Thursday in order for the Judge Stephanie Sautner to determine whether or not she had violated her probation, which stems from a 2007 DUI arrest. But just her luck, a previous judge on Lohan’s case had ruled that her testing period for controlled substances had expired.
Furthermore, as Lohan’s lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley pointed out during a press conference following Sautner’s ruling, alcohol is not a controlled substance, so even if Lohan had been found to be drinking during her testing period (Jan. 3 to Feb. 25), she could not be found in violation of her probation. And since the testing period expired on Feb. 25, Lohan is now able to legally drink alcohol. READ FULL STORY »

Tobey Maguire sued for over $300,000 in alleged illegal poker winnings
Actor Tobey Maguire is reportedly being sued for $311,000 in poker winnings he received from hedge fund manager Bradley Ruderman, currently serving a 10 year sentence in federal prison for embezzling millions of dollars in a Ponzi scheme from 2003 to 2009, reports People.
The money was allegedly won in a series of private, illegal Texas Hold ‘em poker games held in elite Los Angeles-area hotels like The Four Seasons and the Beverly Hills Hotel.
The lawsuit, brought by lawyers representing Ruderman’s clients, claims Maguire, 35, is not entitled to the winnings because they came from $5.2 million of Ruderman’s clients money lost in high stakes gambling, and the games were unlicensed with the state of California. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck also reportedly took part in the games, but are not named in the suit. Director Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) and actor Gabe Kaplan (Welcome Back, Kotter), however, could be sued for their winnings in the games. No criminal complaints have yet been filed.
Reps for Maguire have not responded to requests from EW for comment.

Superman himself couldn’t save him this time. EW has confirmed Sam Jones III, the actor best known for playing Clark Kent’s high school friend Pete Ross on Smallville, was sentenced to a year in federal prison on Wednesday for conspiring to sell more than 10,000 pills of the painkiller oxycodone. The actor’s Canoga, Calif. home was raided in 2009 after local police learned of Jones’ possible connection to a prescription drug ring. He was found guilty last December when it was confirmed that Jones was indeed the “Hollywood connection” the police had been searching for, and initially faced up to 20 years behind bars. Jones will also face three years of probation once he has completed his prison sentence.
