Tobey Maguire sued for over $300,000 in alleged illegal poker winnings

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: ,

Actor Tobey Maguire is reportedly being sued for $311,000 in poker winnings he received from hedge fund manager Bradley Ruderman, currently serving a 10 year sentence in federal prison for embezzling millions of dollars in a Ponzi scheme from 2003 to 2009, reports People.

The money was allegedly won in a series of private, illegal Texas Hold ‘em poker games held in elite Los Angeles-area hotels like The Four Seasons and the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The lawsuit, brought by lawyers representing Ruderman’s clients, claims Maguire, 35, is not entitled to the winnings because they came from $5.2 million of Ruderman’s clients money lost in high stakes gambling, and the games were unlicensed with the state of California. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck also reportedly took part in the games, but are not named in the suit. Director Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) and actor Gabe Kaplan (Welcome Back, Kotter), however, could be sued for their winnings in the games. No criminal complaints have yet been filed.

Reps for Maguire have not responded to requests from EW for comment.

How lame. Jerk lost in a poker game and is filing a lawsuit to get back the money. Man up Ruderman.

    • @Mitch

Ruderman is not the one suing. It’s the people he “stole” from that is suing ex-Spidey.

      • Mitch

        Oops. Sucks for Tobey then.

why don’t they just go to vegas and do it there? what’s the big deal?

This is lame! What if that money had been spent at a store would the store be sued to have it back? If so that is even lamer. How are you supposed to know that someone stole that money?!

My hat is off to your austte command over this topic—bravo!

How lame. Jerk calls out a guy for suing when the guy isn’t the one suing. Man up and learn to read.

Ha ha! Very nice Mitch! It’s a shame more people on here can’t have a good sense of humor about this stuff!

I had to read the article a second time as my original glance left me confused over who was suing him as well. That being said, I hate it for the people who lost money but seriously?! Are they going to sue the power & telephone companies over the money he used to pay his bills? You can’t take a pound of flesh from an innocent party!!

    Loser.

When will Illegal Poker Playing Spiderman be available in stores?

This suit has no chance whatsoever. How can they prove it was their clients’ money he was gambling, and how can they prove how much Tobey, or anyone else won from him. My opinion- the lawyers are just hoping he will pay them something to just go away and save the expense of a trial- good luck with that.

While were at it give me my 15 dollars back for Spider-Man 3. That was a gamble I’m STILL paying for.

Who the heck is Leonard DiCaprio?

  • will g alvira

This white collar punk Ruderman is so bitter and wretched, that he’s going to take out his sentence on other people at all cost.

  • Al

So, if they can prove that Tobey won the money illegally… won’t the money be siezed under RICO or some other laws?

  • The Truth

This is ridiculous. Does this mean they should sue every charity this guy gave to. And the hotel he once stayed at. And the restuarant he dined at to get their money back. Yes they should sue the criminal for everything he has, but if he spent it then its gone period.
