A representative of Catherine Zeta-Jones has revealed that the actress checked into a mental health facility earlier this year. “After dealing with the stress of the past year,” the rep said in a statement — referring to Zeta-Jones’s husband Michael Douglas’ battle with throat cancer — “Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II disorder. She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.” A friend of Zeta-Jones also told People that the Oscar winner has had a “stressful year,” adding, “Catherine has had deal with Michael’s illness and that’s been hard. She went in for a few days because she’s about to start working, and wanted to make sure she’s in top form, which she is.”

'Newsweek' publisher Sidney Harmon dies

Filed under: News and tagged:

According to The New York Times, Sidney Harmon, the chairman of Newsweek and The Daily Beast, passed away Tuesday in Washington at the age of 92. Harmon — who died from complications of acute myeloid leukemia — had found fame and fortune in the 1950s after co-founding Harmon/Kardon, a company that manufactured audio equipment for cars and home. He parlayed that success into a future in media much later in life, purchasing Newsweek at 92 years old in 2010 and merging the magazine with The Daily Beast. Harmon was also a arts patron — he donated $20 million to the Shakespeare Theater Company — and wrote two books: the analytical 1988 read Starting With the People and a 2003 autobiography, Mind Your Own Business: A Maverick’s Guide to Business Leadership and Life.

Huffington Post hit with $105 million class-action lawsuit

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

A class-action suit was filed today against The Huffington Post and AOL, which recently acquired the left-leaning political website for $315 million. The plaintiffs, led by former Huffington Post blogger Jonathan Tasini, claim that thousands of writers have not been fairly compensated by the site and are asking a court for $105 million in damages. “In my view, the Huffington Post’s bloggers have essentially been turned into modern-day slaves on Arianna Huffington’s plantation,” Tasini said today during a conference call, according to Forbes. “She wants to pocket the tens of millions of dollars she reaped from the hard work of those bloggers.”

In a statement, the Huffington Post said: “The lawsuit is wholly without merit. As we’ve said before, our bloggers use our platform — as well as other unpaid group blogs across the web — to connect and help their work be seen by as many people as possible. It’s the same reason people go on TV shows: to promote their views and ideas. HuffPost bloggers can cross-post their work on other sites, including their own. Aside from our group blog, to which thousands of people from around the world contribute, we operate a journalistic enterprise with hundreds of paid staff editors, writers, and reporters.”

Winklevoss twins lose Facebook appeal

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the Harvard-educated twins who accused Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their social network idea, were told by a court that they could not re-open their 2008 agreement in the hopes of a more lucrative settlement. “The Winklevosses are not the first parties bested by a competitor who then seek to gain through litigation what they were unable to achieve in the marketplace. And the courts might have obliged, had the Winklevosses not settled their dispute and signed a release of all claims against Facebook,” wrote Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. “At some point, litigation must come to an end. That point has now been reached.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, the twins’ original settlement with Facebook, which includes company stock, is currently valued at more than $160 million. RadarOnline has the court documents.
