Less than two months after Katie Holmes served the publisher of Star magazine with a $50 million libel lawsuit for their January cover story “Katie Drug Shocker,” the legal wrangle has been resolved. According to a statement released today from Holmes’ camp, the actress and American Media, Inc. have reached a settlement, part of which includes an apology printed in the magazine’s May 9 issue and touted on the cover. The full statement reads:

Katie Holmes announced today that she has reached a settlement of her defamation lawsuit against American Media, Inc., publisher of Star Magazine.  Ms. Holmes filed a complaint against the tabloid last month after Star published a cover story falsely suggesting she was addicted to drugs.

While the monetary terms of the settlement are confidential, American Media has issued a rare public apology to Ms. Holmes, which it announced on the cover of the May 9th, 2011 issue of Star, published today.  The apology, which is also printed inside the magazine, reads as follows:

“In a recent issue of Star, we published headlines about Katie Holmes that could be read to suggest that she was addicted to drugs.  Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for a drug addiction.  Star apologizes to Ms. Holmes for any misperception and will be making a substantial donation to charity on Ms. Holmes’ behalf for any harm that we may have caused.”

In connection with the apology and settlement, American Media has made a substantial contribution on Ms. Holmes’ behalf to Dizzy Feet Foundation, a non-profit charity that helps underprivileged youngsters realize their dreams of becoming professional dancers and to support, improve, and increase access to dance education in the United States.

In a statement, Katie Holmes said: “I’m pleased that this lawsuit could be resolved amicably and accept American Media’s apology.  With this dispute out of the way, I look forward to once again focusing my attention on my family and career.”

Ms. Holmes’ attorney, Aaron Moss said: “American Media did the right thing by apologizing to Katie, but this is a story that should never have been published in the first place.  Her lawsuit should serve as a lesson to other tabloids that if they print false and defamatory stories about Katie, she will stand up for her legal rights.”

A lawyer for American Media told EW, “Our only comment is that the lawsuit has been amicably resolved, and the statement in the magazine speaks for itself.”

A tiny ounce of justice in a celeb crazy world. Not a fan of Holmes but glad to see her take the scuzzy rag mags to task.

I am so proud of Katie ~ she could have said I can’t be bothered. But that’s how these guys win because good people don’t bother them. Well one of the best people stood her ground and said let’s do this.
That’s a mom a daughter can be proud of when she looks at this & grows up & sees where the money went. I love it!

    • sara

You are proud of a mother who lets her 4 year old daughter eat p*nis shaped candy??

      • Ba ba Hoey

What do you think she should give her the real thing?

  • lalala

“Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict”? Please. Of course they did with their cover headline of “Katie Drug Shocker!” What did they think readers would interpret that to mean?

  • star magazine

    • bobo

      • @bobo

Have you learned nothing from the article?

  • Mary

    Mindless untalented zombie? YES
    Drug addict? apparently not.

    • Erin

Yeah not a Katie-bot fan at all but I’m all for her standing up to those crap tabloids.

  • Dicazi

The “addiction” that Scientology peddles is not a pill and is not illegal.

    • @Dicazi

Neither is any other religion but the damage they cause far surpasses any pill.

      • Dicazi

Other religions were not invented by a SF writer during a poker game to see who could who could come up with the “best” religion.

      • Caroline

Nope. Other religions were invented by sexist, homophobic, elitist, bible-thumping loonies who wanted to see who could come up with the best religion.

      • JaySin420

        Nicely done Caroline!

      • Pillow Pants

That’s true…we don’t really know the motives of all those other sci-fi writers.

    • Sam J

And ancient desert dwellers wanting control by attempting to alieviate the stress of ultimate death is any MORE reasonable? The God Delusion is mankinds most potent drug.

      • JD

And the Atheistic nihilism of the regimes of Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia proved a better solution?

  • PHD

    more celebs should do this…

  • Jenny

I kind of feel for Catherine and William. The British tabloids are so much worse and will be on them relenlessly after the wedding. Of course US tabloids are pretty lousy and I wish other celebs would do the same and maybe they would go out of business.

    • Erin

Eh don’t feel sorry for the royals at all. I feel sorry for us having to read and hear about every single little detail and non detail.

  • Lissy

“Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for a drug addiction.” What did Star intend to suggest, I wonder?

  • wha?

I don’t know about this. Marrying Tom Cruise must have some pharmacuetical explanation….

  • Rena

Write a story about how ANELINA JOLIE was a victim of hatred and jealousy and you should say you’re sorry to her!

    • Caroline

Who is Anelina Jolie? Is she related to Brad Pitt’s baby mama?

  • debbie

i quit getting STAR mag. because of their lies, cover insinuations.good riddence.good for you, katie!

  • debbie

the only thing good about STAR mag.,was their crossword puzzles, lol.
