'Restrepo' director Tim Hetherington killed in Libya

Tim Hetherington, an award-winning British war photographer who co-directed the award-winning Afghanistan documentary, Restrepo, has been killed in Libya, ABC News has reported. Yesterday, Hetherington had tweeted, “In beseiged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.”

There are reports that Chris Hondros, a Pulitzer-Prize nominated photographer, was also killed in the assault, and three other journalists were also wounded.

    It’s “Restrepo” not “RestrApo”

    • B.Rich

For real, how do you miss that in the headline and the link?

  • Chad

the doc is called Restrepo, not Restrapo

    Looks like they fixed it.

This is terrible! Restrepo was such a wonderful film — one that everyone should see.

    How sad.

Totally agree – everyone should see Restrepo. Tim’s death is very sad. May he rest in peace.

While I emotionally (and finlacinaly) support our military members, are these really wars’ worth fighting? Afghanistan seems like a lost cause, an uneducated population of desert people, and the war in Iraq just an unjustified action against false causes. This is why average people like myself have a hard time keeping interest in military actions going on. A lot of people are joining the military for personal (rather than political or ethical) reasons; the economy is terrible and finding college money is very difficult. Is it worth risking your physical and/or emotional life? I sincerely believe it takes a huge amount of personal bravery to risk both of the aforementioned, but have to wonder if our government has the same concern for our country’s young adults. I believe efforts would be better spent on actions right here or at international airports.

Five comments about a stupid typo in the article, and no one has commented on the tragic death of this man?!?!?
This is horrible news! May he, and the other brave journalists and photographers over there who were killed, rest in peace.

I did on his Facebook page….what a tragedy

I think that the family and friends of PFC Juan Sebastian Restrepo would beg to differ about the spelling of his name being a “stupid typo”.

Take some time to spell the name of a fallen soldier correctly EW. Dancing with the Stars updates can wait a couple of minutes.

      Snap!
That said, this is very sad news indeed. I was really moved by the film Restrepo and urged many others to watch it. It really helped put a face on the war and the struggles the soldiers go through every day.

Heartbreaking news. My heart goes out to the families affected.

This puts a western face on the plight that’s ongoing over there. I wonder if this will step up NATO efforts whether you agree or disagree with the rebels situation. I’m just curious.

Chris Hondros’s death is not confirmed. While many reports initially said he died, most are now saying he may be alive, fighting for his life.

I actually gasped when I read this. I met him once, very briefly. He came across as a very thoughtful, intelligent, dedicated photojournalist. So sorry to hear this. Condolences to his friends and family.

Such sad and shocking news. So many insulated Americans are unaware of the many people around the world living with the everyday threat of death and systematized violence.

  • dee dee1

Incredibly sad news about two great talents. I’m so sad for their families.
