A representative of Catherine Zeta-Jones has revealed that the actress checked into a mental health facility earlier this year. “After dealing with the stress of the past year,” the rep said in a statement — referring to Zeta-Jones’s husband Michael Douglas’ battle with throat cancer — “Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II disorder. She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on her two upcoming films.” A friend of Zeta-Jones also told People that the Oscar winner has had a “stressful year,” adding, “Catherine has had deal with Michael’s illness and that’s been hard. She went in for a few days because she’s about to start working, and wanted to make sure she’s in top form, which she is.”

Good for her! With Demi Lovato revealing her eating disorder, and now this, maybe we can start removing the stigmas associated with mental health illnesses. One can only hope.

  • Ellen

Great honesty! And she deserves the rest. Cancer is hell, even if you aren’t bipolar.

Best wishes to you, Ms Zeta-Jones. I have had issues with mental illness myself and I hope a speedy recovery for you.

  • Liz Lemon

I never knew she was bipolar. I wish her the best.

Hillary, I just wanted to commend you on the respectful headline, which is a far cry from the one PopEater has listed – ‘Catherine Zeta-Jones in Mental Hospital’. I think that’s just shameful on their part.

As someone who struggles with mental illness on a daily basis, I applaud Catherine for being upfront and honest about her struggles. I agree with the poster above; it’s time to start removing the stigmas associated with mental illnesses.

I have bipolar disorder and while it is hard to deal with, it’s not impossible. Most people with bipolar disorder can live happy lives with the help and support of their family and friends. Kudos, Catherine! Always keep your head up.

Since, in MN, mental health facilities are one step up from prison, I always recoil a little when I hear a celeb is in the hospital for treatment. Those places are not for the faint of heart. I really wish her well and hope that CA facilities are geared toward a peaceful recovery.

I wouldn’t worry abot Catherine’s being in a mental health facility as she’s definately not in a state run facility. She’s in one of the more “upscale” places where money is no object. If she were in a state run operation, she’sd be in another snale pit. She’s most assuredly in a place that charges 10 to 25 k a week.

  • Charlie Sheen

    • Charlie Sheen

Catherine, by going to get treatment, you are WINNING!!!!!

  • brad

She has all of my support. I deal with depression on a daily basis too.

  • lisalicknack

    good for you!!!

  • teri

i doubt its bi polar. that condition requires more than a few days in a facility. i have been thru hell in my life and didnt have $200 million to fall back on

    • Ann

I think we all have Bipolar, its called anger.

      • Jeff

No, it’s called being broke. Why is it, as tough as bi-polar or addiction can get, it’s always a little easier to deal with when one has money. Can you imagine poor Linds if she were poor? She wouldn’t get the presses’ attention as she does and she’d either be turning tricks on the street or in a free rehab program. Thank God she can afford 10k a week for her treatment.
