Mariah Carey gives birth to twins

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon welcomed twins, one baby girl and one baby boy, on Saturday, the AP reports. Coincidentally, Saturday also marked Carey and Cannon’s third wedding anniversary. Carey’s publicist told the AP that the couple had not yet named the children.

Argentine writer Ernesto Sabato dies at age 99

Ernesto Sabato, Argentine intellectual and author of novels The Tunnel and On Heroes and Tombs, died Saturday of complications from bronchitis at age 99, the AP reports. In addition to his literary career, Sabato was known for leading the investigation into human rights crimes committed by Argentina’s former military dictatorship.

January Jones of 'Mad Men' is pregnant

January Jones, who stars as Betty Francis on the AMC drama Mad Men, is pregnant, reports People. In confirming the news to the magazine, a representative for the actress did not reveal the identity of the father, but noted that the baby, Jones’ first, is due this fall. Jones stars in June’s X-Men: First Class, while the fifth season of Mad Men premieres in 2012.

Writers Guild membership 'overwhelmingly' approve new contract

In stark contrast to the last time the Writers Guild of America negotiated a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the WGA announced today that its members had “overwhelmingly” — and quietly — ratified a new three-year contract with the AMPTP by 90.7 percent. The terms run from May 2, 2011 through May 1, 2014, and include increases in pension plan contributions, pay TV payments, and minimum fees.

The WGA famously went on a 100-day strike between Nov. 5, 2007 and Feb. 12, 2008 during the previous contract negotiation, largely over payment for new media.

Alice Ward, mother of Micky Ward, passes away

Alice Ward, the mother of boxer Micky Ward, died Wednesday in Boston after going into cardiac arrest. She was 79 years old. Ward, who managed her son’s career, was portrayed by Melissa Leo in last year’s The Fighter; Leo picked up an Academy Award for playing the role. Mark Wahlberg, who played Micky in the David O. Russell film, reportedly contacted the family to express condolences.

'Star' magazine apologizes to Katie Holmes for headline

Less than two months after Katie Holmes served the publisher of Star magazine with a $50 million libel lawsuit for their January cover story “Katie Drug Shocker,” the legal wrangle has been resolved. According to a statement released today from Holmes’ camp, the actress and American Media, Inc. have reached a settlement, part of which includes an apology printed in the magazine’s May 9 issue and touted on the cover. Kate Hudson engaged to Muse's Matthew Bellamy

Kate Hudson is engaged to Matthew Bellamy, the lead singer of Muse. The actress shared the news with Matt Lauer on Today, saying, “It just happened a week ago. I’m so glad you noticed. I haven’t really announced it. … I was waiting for someone to notice.”

Grammy Awards exec producer John Cossette dies at 54

John Cossette, who produced many Grammy Awards and BET Awards telecasts over the last two decades, has passed away, his family announced today. He was 54. “We ask that you please respect our privacy during this incredibly emotional time,” Cossette’s wife Rita and daughters Maria and Rose said in their statement. “We appreciate everyone’s love and support.” Cossette also oversaw the re-opening of Radio City Music Hall, and is one of the producers of the current Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet.

From Justin to Kelly to Justin to baby: American Idol‘s season 1 runner-up has welcomed a baby with wife Reina Capodici, People reports. William Neko Bell Guarini was born April 26. “With a full head of curly brown hair, wide open and alert eyes, he came charging into the world,” Guarini told People. “Reina is doing wonderfully and should be given a medal for going 10 months and one week with child.” Capodici has one child — 5-year-old Lola — from a previous relationship.

Ian Ziering, wife welcome baby girl

Former Beverly Hills, 90210 star has a new member to add to his zip code: Baby girl Mia Loren Ziering. The actor’s wife, Erin, gave birth to Mia Monday night in Los Angeles, according to People. Ziering wrote on his Facebook page: “Well, it’s official, I’m a dad! … As I sit holding Mia, Erin sleeps the most beautiful sleep. My thoughts race with visions of a brighter future, only made possible by what happens today… or, last night! God bless us all.” The couple chose a name beginning with the letter “M” to honor the actor’s late mother, Micki.
