Lindsay Lohan gets extension -- next date, March 25
Lindsay Lohan did not strike a deal with prosecutors who are preparing a case against her for felony grand theft of a designer diamond necklace, but a Los Angeles judge gave the actress more time to decide her plea, setting an interim court date of March 25. Prosecutors and Lohan’s lawyer can continue to work on a plea bargain in the meantime, but Lohan will need to be in court on March 25 if she intends to plead guilty or no contest and accept the parameters of the court’s offer. If she decides to plead not guilty, an April 22 court date has already been set that will hear the felony grand theft case, as well as charges that Lohan has violated conditions of her probation.
Lohan has denied stealing the necklace from a Venice, Calif., jewelry store. The court expects Lohan to inform it of her intentions by March 23.

More than 30 people were arrested after a five-month investigation, police officials told the paper. Mel Gibson cops plea -- no jail time
Mel Gibson will avoid jail time after agreeing to plead no contest to simple battery against Oksana Grigorieva, according to TMZ. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office declined to comment, but Gibson’s rep confirmed that the agreement will keep Gibson from serving time. Gibson’s attorney, Blair Berk, gave a statement, saying, “Mel’s priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter, Lucia, and the rest of his children be put first in any decisions made. It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the District Attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end.”

Lindsay Lohan necklace up for auction
The necklace at the center of Lindsay Lohan’s most recent run-in with the law is going up for auction. Kamofie and Company, the Venice, Calif., jewelry store that accused Lindsay Lohan of theft, will put the designer diamond necklace up for auction and donate the proceeds to charity. “The extensive media coverage of this case has been surprising, to say the least, and we are disappointed and upset by the various articles which have challenged our integrity,” the store’s owners said in a press release. “We have already publicly released the videotape which speaks for itself and accurately records the incident, and we believe the next step toward achieving closure is to donate the now-famous jewelry to charity.”
“[Kamofie creator and designer] Sofia Kaman would rather the money go to help an appropriate charity, since at least that way some good can result from this incident,” reported Christopher Spencer, the company’s spokesman.
Any auction will have to wait until after the legal proceedings are completed, as the necklace is currently being held as evidence by the Los Angeles District Attorney.

Vivian Schiller, CEO of NPR, resigns
Vivian Schiller, the embattled president and CEO of NPR, has resigned from the radio network. NPR posted a statement from Dave Edwards, Chairman of the Board of Directors, announcing Schiller’s departure: “The Board accepted her resignation with understanding, genuine regret, and great respect for her leadership of NPR these past two years.” The statement also notes that her resignation arrives after “a traumatic period for NPR.” Schiller had been at the center of the controversial firing in October of NPR analyst Juan Williams, who was dismissed after making statements about Muslims on The O’Reilly Factor. (Schiller later apologized for the handling of Williams’ firing.) Yesterday brought more embarrassment: according to the Washington Post, an undercover video filmed by conservative activist James O’Keefe features NPR executive Ron Schiller (no relation to the exiting CEO) saying that Tea Party followers aren’t “just Islamophobic, but really xenophobic… They believe in sort of white, middle-America gun-toting. I mean, it’s scary. They’re seriously racist, racist people.”
Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr, who appeared on 'Celebrity Rehab,' dies
Mike Starr, the former bassist for the Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains, was found dead today at his home in Salt Lake City. A spokesperson for the Salt Lake City police department said that officers responded to a 911 call from Starr’s apartment at about 1:40 p.m., where they pronounced the rocker dead. Police are still investigating the cause of death, though they’ve ruled out foul play and said there “was nothing glaring [at the scene] that would immediately indicate [a drug overdose].” The Utah Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy, but its results typically take at least a month.
Starr, who was 44, played with Alice in Chains from its formation in 1987 until 1993, including on its multi-platinum albums Facelift (1990) and Dirt (1992), which spawned hit songs like “Man In the Box,” “Would?” and “Rooster.” READ FULL STORY »
