Watermelon-crushing comic Gallagher hospitalized

Gallagher, the gonzo stand-up comedian famous for whacking watermelons, collapsed last night during a performance at a club in Rochester, Minn. His manager, Christine Sherrer, confirmed reports that the 64-year old comic was resting at Saint Marys Hospital and could be there a couple of days as they await the results of tests. According to the Rochester Post Bulletin, Gallagher was stricken while attempting to strike a watermelon with a sledge hammer during his act at the Whiskey Bones Roadhouse.

Gallagher’s next two shows, scheduled for tonight and tomorrow in Vernon Hills, Ill., have been canceled.

“was stricken while attempting to strike a watermelon with a sledge hammer” Most likely that is the first time in the history of the planet that this sentence was ever written.

Lucky MAN. If you’re going to have heart attack symptoms, having them in Rochester, Mn–home of the world-famous Mayo Clinic–is the place to do it! The audience at the Roadhouse probably had more qualified medical professionals in attendance than any other such club in the country. Get well soon, Gallagher! You’ll be back to demolishing giant fruit and veg in no time. Way to go, Mayo!

Of course we all hope for a safe and fast recovery, but you have to appreciate the irony.

comedians can find humor in any situation, it doesn’t mean they wish him ill. people who take themselves too seriously are not given to comedy. check a roast, this was tame and hardly insulting…

Met him in Hutchinson,Ks he was playing the Fox Theater very nice man. He signed my brothers mother inlaws shirt, but she had to sign his in return. How funny, but as long as we bought tickets from his web site you got meet and greet and autographs, very funny, my kid’s mom had a bump on the head after he hit a pice of candy with a tennis racket. Hope him the best, and I bet he is getting a laugh out of it.
