James Mee, the Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who stopped Mel Gibson on suspicion of drunk driving in Malibu in 2006, has been given legal clearance from a judge to sue his employer for discrimination, retaliation, and harassment, according to the AP. Mee charges that his superiors pressured him to retract details of an anti-Semitic rant he claimed a drunken Gibson gave at the time of his arrest. Since the incident, Mee claims he was transferred and has been passed over for promotion. “We dispute his allegations and look forward to telling our story,” says Steve Whitmore, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Mel Gibson’s publicist had no comment.
