Michael Jackson preliminary hearing ends, Conrad Murray ordered to stand trial

Filed under: News and tagged:

Dr. Conrad Murray was ordered to stand trial today for the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson, the Associated Press is reporting. The ruling came at the conclusion of a six-day preliminary hearing in the case before Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, in which prosecutors offered testimony from detectives, Jackson’s bodyguard, hospital physicians, medical experts, an L.A. county coroner official, and director/choreographer Kenny Ortega, among others, asserting that Murray had given Jackson a lethal dose of the hospital-grade anesthetic propofol, and then did not attend to Jackson’s care afterwards. The judge also stripped Murray of his medical license.

Murray, 57, has pleaded not guilty, and faces up to four years in prison if convicted. He’s due to be arraigned Jan. 25.

Coroner's official testifies Dr. Conrad Murray provided Michael Jackson with 'substandard' care

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

On Tuesday, at the preliminary hearing to determine whether Dr. Conrad Murray will be tried for involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Michael Jackson, a coroner’s official testified that the pop icon was basically healthy but that, as his personal physician, Murray provided him with “substandard” care. According to the Associated Press, Dr. Christopher Rogers, a forensic pathologist, told the court that Murray was wrongly using the powerful anesthetic propofol to treat the singer’s chronic insomnia and that he should have more closely monitored Jackson while he was under sedation. Rogers said he didn’t believe the defense’s suggestion that Jackson may have injected himself with propofol, though he told the court that it’s possible Jackson may have swallowed some of the drug, based on the amount found in his stomach after his death. On Monday, a detective who questioned Murray in the wake of Jackson’s death said the doctor told him that he noticed Jackson wasn’t breathing shortly after 11 a.m. on the morning of his death. According to phone records, Murray didn’t call paramedics until 12:21 p.m., a delay that prosecutors contend demonstrates negligence on Murray’s part.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' beats 'Wicked' at Broadway box office

Filed under: News and tagged:

After taking a beating in the press for its accident-prone stunts, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has some good news to share: The $65 million Julie Taymor-directed musical was Broadway’s biggest grosser last week with a $1,588,514 haul, besting evergreen hit Wicked by a mere $58. Both shows played at 100 percent capacity, though Spider-Man‘s Foxwoods Theater is slightly larger than Wicked‘s Gershwin Theater. Since its first preview on Nov. 28, Spider-Man has proven its ability to draw crowds despite controversies over its safety and tepid advance reviews. Time will tell if the high-profile show can hang onto the top spot; Spider-Man is still in previews leading up to its official Feb. 7 opening, while Wicked has been a Broadway stalwart since 2003.
