Video game sales stable in 2010

Tagged:

Video game sales in the United States in 2010 were about the same as they were in 2009, according to a market research group. While sales of portable, console, and PC games down about five percent, the sale of used games, digital downloads, games for smart phones, and games played over social networks increased to keep the overall sales figures around $15.5 billion. The Xbox 360 was the only console to sell more units in 2010 than 2009, perhaps thanks to the debut of Kinect, which sold over 8 million units in the last two months of the year. [AP]

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' pushes opening night again, to March 15

Filed under: News and tagged:

Producers for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark announced today that the musical has pushed its opening night for the third time, from Feb. 7 to March 15. The show, the most expensive in Broadway history, has been in previews since Nov. 18, and plagued with technical issues, injuries, and actor departures. Performances scheduled for Jan. 18 and Jan. 25 have also been canceled, and ticketholders will be offered refunds or exchanges. In the release, producer Michael Cohl said the show was “ten-times more complicated…than anything else, and the preview schedule allows for only very limited rehearsal time. We simply need more time to fully execute the creative team’s vision before freezing the show.” Cohl also insists “this will be the final postponement” (emphasis his).

Meanwhile, previews of the show have been performing at 100 percent capacity, and last week it was the top grossing show on Broadway.

Lawsuit over Obama 'Hope' poster settled

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Shepard-Fairey-obamaImage Credit: National Portrait Gallery/Shepard Fairey/ObeyGiant.com/AP ImagesThe Associated Press and artist Shepard Fairey have settled a legal dispute over whether Fairey violated copyright terms by doctoring a 2006 AP photo of then Senator Barack Obama for Fairey’s famous “Hope” poster of Obama, the New York Times reports. Both sides agreed that “neither side surrendered its view of the law” and settled with undisclosed financial terms. Fairey, featured heavily in the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, created the poster to support Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. In 2009, Fairey preemptively sued the AP after the news organization accused him of infringement, arguing that his use of the photo fell under fair use. Last year, however, after Fairey admitted that he had identified a different AP photo used for the “Hope” poster than the one he actually used and deleted other images to cover his actions, a criminal investigation and civil case were launched. In settling their dispute, Fairey has agreed not to use another AP photo without permission. Fairey and the AP will also share the rights to the Hope image.
