Brother of 'Harry Potter' actress jailed for six months

Filed under: News and tagged:

Ashraf Azad, the 28-year-old brother of 22-year-old Harry Potter actress Afshan Azad, has checked into jail for six months for assaulting his sister last May, according to Reuters. In December, Ashraf pleaded guilty to charges of assault, stemming from the incident at their home in Longsight Manchester, where he attacked Afshan for dating a non-Muslim. Afshan — who played Padma Patil in the films — had requested that the court not send Ashraf to jail. “The persistent attack was accompanied by serious and very hurtful abuse and threats,” Judge Roger Thomas said during the sentencing. “The background to this offense lies in the concern that you, and perhaps other family members, had about Afshan’s relationship with a young man who was not of the Islamic faith.”

Brad-WomackImage Credit: Bob D'Amico/ABCAfter recent reports alleged that Brad Womack, star of ABC’s current season of The Bachelor, has a criminal record — including charges of forging a driver’s license in 1993, public intoxication, and passing a bad check — a rep for the show issued the following statement to EW from Womack:

I’m sure I wouldn’t be the first to admit that I had a couple of missteps when I was a teenager — some 20-odd years ago. Some of the claims have been blown out of proportion, but I took responsibility for my actions and took immediate measures to remedy the situation. It was just part of my growing pains back when I was still young and naïve — you learn from your experiences good and bad — and you move on. It ultimately builds character.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' gets new high-flying finale

Filed under: News and tagged:

Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has a new finale of aerial acrobatics performed by Spider-Man/Peter Parker, a rep for the show confirms to EW. The new stunts have replaced the show’s old ending, in which a curtain dropped abruptly from the ceiling after a bit of dialogue between Peter Parker and Mary Jane. Earlier this month, producer Michael Cohl told EW that director Julie Taymor, writer Eric Berger, and composers Bono and the Edge were convening to reassess the musical in the weeks before its official opening night, now scheduled for March 15 after three lengthy postponements. (The show was originally scheduled to debut on Dec. 21 of last year.)

Despite accident-plagued preview performances and mixed early reviews, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark continues to sell strongly at the Broadway box office, grossing $1.25 million during the week ending Jan. 16.
